6 Types Of Puppet Stages
Just as there are different types of puppets, there are also different types of puppet stages. This article is about 6 different types of puppet stages.
Papier-mâché
One church we served at formed a tree-shaped chicken wire and covered it with papier-mâché to give it a textured look. The tree had several large holes where the puppets could appear, and it also had a large branch behind which the puppets could come up. This was a permanent stage and it was well executed.
Doorway Theatre
In the doorway, use a curtain rod or a tube with rubber plugs on the ends. (An adjustable tension curtain rod works well for this.) You can place a blanket or sheet over the rod after it’s in place, or pull the curtain over the rod before you install it. One nice advantage of this type of theater is that you can easily adjust it to the height of your puppeteer.
However, there are several disadvantages to this type of stage. You are limited by the size of the door. If it’s a standard 36″ door, you might be able to fit two puppeteers in there, but it will be tight. Another downside is that the door may not be in a good spot in the room, and you may need to add a plain piece of material behind it to block out what is in the next room. Also, if it is the only entrance to the room, it could cause problems if someone wants to enter or needs to leave the room during the game.
Strong cardboard box
This works for a temporary cinema, but is not durable enough for a permanent one, unless you have a good supply and can replace parts as needed. We used this as an extension of our normal theater when we did the Christmas show. The scene was a toy store and we used cardboard boxes covered with packing paper as toy shelves. Several of the toys were dolls that “came to life” when their owners left.
Wooden theater
You can build several different styles of wooden theaters. A camp near us designed a set on the theme of westerns. They had a bunk house on one side, a wooden fence in the middle, and a ranch house on the other side. Dolls could appear above the fence or on the windows or doors of any house.
In the church we attended, we built a doll house. It consisted of a wall running the width of the room, about three feet from one end. We built it to look like the side of a house with a large window on one side, a door in the middle and a small window on the other side. To get the effect of the side of the house, we used 1″ X 6″ Novelty siding. We also added a roof using cedar wood. To the right of the door was a 36″ TV and our sound system. We also positioned it so we could put a white dry erase board over the door.
Wooden frame theater
When our team numbered more than eight members, our old theater was not big enough. We also did some outdoor programming and found that the wind caused problems with our regular theater; so we decided to build a new, stronger theater.
First we made some wooden frames using 1″ X 3″ boards. The frames were just over 4′ tall and 2′ wide and held together using L-shaped brackets and screws. We then stretched the fabric over the frame and attached it on the back. Hinges with removable pins were attached to the back so that the pieces could be joined together. The frames are then joined to form a semi-circle.
We then used 1″ X 3″ boards to make a frame 6′ long by 3′ wide and covered it with fabric like the smaller frames. We then used 1″ X 3″ X 6′ for the back posts and attached the frame crosswise over the top to make a theater backdrop. The upright boards were bolted to the end frames. The effect was similar to a theater with PVC pipes.
PVC pipe frame theater
This is our most used theater that has 2″ X 6″ wooden bases and a frame made of 1 ½” PVC pipe that can be purchased at most hardware stores. Curtains are draped over the pipe for the final look. There are many advantages to using this type of theater. They are durable, light and portable, easy to assemble or disassemble, sturdy, easy to maintain, relatively cheap and not difficult to make.
There are 6 different types of stages. Choose the one that best suits your needs, add some imagination and creativity and see what happens.
