7 Reasons Why You Should Boycott Gay Pride If You Want A Relationship And Live A Normal Life
When did Gay Pride stop being a celebration and become a spectacle? If it weren’t for the “Equality for All” sign, I might have mistaken the event for a carnival rather than Gay Pride 2011 in Miami Beach.
After all, the street has hosted tanned bodies with oiled faces, fake breasts the size of beach balls and impressive bulges in swimsuits, authentic and altered.
There were enough condoms to bathe a whole crowd and enough glitter to dazzle Stevie Wonder. As a healthy gay professional, I began to consider the reasons why gay people should boycott Gay Pride.
1. mockery. Gay Pride is the most visible gay event in many cities. It does not present positive or serious images of homosexuals. While it’s great to have fun, Pride does little to gain respect for gay people in society. Perhaps there should be a place for raucous celebrations and a separately broadcast event where gays can celebrate tastefully.
2. Reinforced stereotypes. Homosexuals deserve the opportunity to take social steps that strengthen their collective standing in the world. Instead, Pride perpetuates negative gay stereotypes, as well as obsessions with body image and sexual promiscuity.
3. Hypersexualization. The parade and events only reinforce the idea that your sexuality is the core of your identity if you are gay. In addition to lubricants, the men also sold a spray to prevent the spread of herpes at a stand by the beach. The product meant not just a gullible audience, but a raunchy, sex-crazed audience for those at Pride.
4. Arrested progress. What legislator in their right mind would think that gay men standing on the streets in underwear that is too small should deserve some special rights? I feel that scantily clad symbolizes narcissism more than dignity for history or passion for social progress. What kind of tribute would Martin Luther King Jr. get if for Black History Month, African-Americans ran through the streets in thongs, shaking their butts for beads?
5. Social alienation. We are all human, but Pride divides the gay community from mainstream society in drastic, harmful ways. How should non-gay people feel about or sympathize with dildo-sucking sex caricatures? Pride should sponsor events that have a more universal appeal, revered and shared by many sects of society.
6. cliques. The roles of twink, jock, bear, daddy, etc. are becoming more obvious and isolating. I’ve found that separating by body type makes it nearly impossible to meet people outside of my build. Mostly men were posing and it was too intimidating to approach them.
7. A lost purpose. What is the goal of Gay Pride? If we are not connecting with other gays, progressing socially, or enjoying the well-deserved recognition of a minority, what is being accomplished?
As a group of oiled-up, half-naked teenagers passed by, a woman walked her child into view, staring at the parade. I couldn’t help but imagine what the outsider was thinking. She was certainly not impressed or inspired by dehumanized men and women rubbing their nipple rings and flossing their behinds. Homosexuals, we must prioritize how we want the world to represent us and treat us with respect. Save the circus antics for the carnival.
