Kids’ Bikes
Children grow up fast (too fast if you ask me), this is not news to any parent. It’s obvious when your child grows out of their clothes, but for some it’s not so obvious when they grow out of their bike. It’s pretty easy from a horrendous two to about a 4, and the trike fits the bill perfectly. However, bicycles are a completely different story. By riding a bicycle, children learn inertia, steering, braking and pedaling. Of course, tricycles do not teach your child the very important skill of balance.
The average age of most children who start riding a 2-wheel motorcycle is around 5 years old.
At the age of 4-8 years, there is a significant development of physical coordination, agility and balance. By this age, most if not all children are experts at starting and stopping on a tricycle or two-wheeler with training wheels. Riding a two-wheeler for the first time requires much more than physical strength. The child also needs to be self-confident and motivated to venture on the “big kid’s bike”. Experts say this development may not occur until age nine or older. If you’ve ever taught a child to ride a bike, you know that it can take a lot of patience. If your child is not motivated to ride a two-wheeler, they can be persuaded by friends who ride two-wheelers, the parent explaining to the child that training wheels are “for babies”.
Sizes of children’s bicycles
The size of children’s bikes is determined by the diameter of the wheels, not, as is commonly thought, by the height of the seat and the size of the frame. This is how bicycles for adults are determined. A very important factor in your choice should be the brakes. I do not recommend hand brakes for a child until they are at least 6 years old. Many children are not coordinated enough to use them, making them potentially very dangerous. So that leaves the coaster brakes. Smaller children find it much easier to use coaster brakes, but dependence on them can cause problems later in life when coaster brakes are less common. The next step up from the smaller kids’ bikes is a 26- or 27-inch frame size with 700c wheels. Wise advice: regardless of age, have a professional size your child’s bike, don’t take unnecessary safety risks.
Buying a bicycle
With hundreds of brands, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of bikes. The best way to choose the right bike for your child is to educate them on the basics of riding a bike. Get to know the basic bicycle parts as well as competitive prices.
As I mentioned in another article about buying a bike for adults, find a dealer you can trust. The local guy down the block has a much higher interest in giving you great customer service since the big box stores have so much more.
Children’s bikes are cheaper than adult bikes, and there’s a reason for that. Manufacturers understand that kids outgrow bikes quickly, so most models will not have the same quality parts as your bike. However, that doesn’t mean the bikes aren’t well made.
A properly sized children’s bike will allow the rider to get off the bike and ride it. With a slight lean you should also be able to place your butt on the seat, put your foot on the pedal and take off. The knees should never hit the handlebars and should obviously be able to easily reach the handlebars.
Hopefully there will be a range of bikes in your price range. Pick a few and you’ll notice that the cheaper ones are made of heavier steel, while the lighter and more expensive bikes are made of metal alloys. In my opinion there is no really noticeable difference other than a little ease in handling the light alloys.
