Tahr Hunting in New Zealand

About the New Zealand Tahr

The Himalayan Tahr, originally from the area around Tibet, was introduced into the southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand around 1904 to 1906. Initially considered a pest, the New Zealand government controlled the Tahr herds with government archers and aircraft. Over the last twenty years the status of the Tahr hunter has changed from an unwanted pest to a renewable, valuable and manageable resource for many local and overseas trophy hunters.

The tahr is a majestic animal found on rocky hills with its long “lion” mane blowing in the wind. This is truly a magnificent sight. When released in pursuit, the Tahr hunter will be amazed at their climbing abilities in the steep New Zealand Alps they call home.

The Himalayan tahr is a close relative of the free-ranging mountain goat. The Tahr has relatively short legs and a small head with large eyes and small pointed ears. Their hooves have a flexible, rubbery core that allows them to grip smooth rocks, while the hard, sharp edge can dig into small footholds. The Tahr inhabits steep rugged mountain landscapes ranging from 3000′ to 8000′ above sea level. Males are much larger and have a different color and horn structure than females. An adult Himalayan tahr can weigh 300 to 400 pounds and stand 2½ to 3 feet tall. Nurseries (females) weigh only 45-55 pounds. This is one of the largest differences in the ratio of “pairs” between all mammals in the world. Himalayan Tahr are herbivores that feed on tall alpine grasses and shrubs. The Himalayan tahr can be found in herds of 2-25 animals and can live up to 14 years in the wild.

What makes a Trophy Bull Tahr?

A Tahr bull has an 8-9″ antler base and a sharp round curled horn of 10 to 14 inches. A Tahr Hunter will judge a good trophy male by his long mane as well as his horns, although the record book judging uses only a combination of base horn diameter and the length of both horns. Most Tahr hunting guides will look for horns over 11″. Tahr horns 12.5″ to 13.5″ are considered above “trophy” average, and horns over 14″ are exceptional. There have been several New Zealand tahrs recorded with antlers greater than 15″ and these usually fall into the SCI Top 10 Record category.

When should I plan my Tahr hunt?

Like chamois hunting, tahr hunting can be done annually. The ideal time to hunt Tahra is late autumn and winter in New Zealand. While Tahr hunts in winter, Tahr will have their winter coats and manes. The tahr’s mane can grow 5-8″ in length from February to early June and take on a darker color. Late May, June, July and August are ideal months for hunting tahr and chamois. The tahr’s rut lasts from late May to July, which usually correlates with the first snow of the season. Rut is a great time to bowhunt. Tahr can be hunted along with red deer “roar” or rut in March and April, but the hunter will have to work harder to find Tahr from the long mane at that time of year. Coats will also be lighter in color before winter sets in.

What is the best way to hunt New Zealand Tahr?

Most of the Tahr hunting mountains are accessible by two-track or fire trails to the mountain tops. Hunters typically tour the mountain slopes early in the morning and again in the late afternoon, then hunt down the mountain and are greeted by the outfitter’s vehicle below. Tahr hunting terrain can vary from 3′ tall lush grass to rocky and shale slopes. In most cases, the physical demand for this type of hunting is much lower than that of mountain goat or sheep hunting. You should allow at least 2 days to hunt with a Tahr rifle (in good weather) and 3-4 days with a bow for a good specimen. If you strictly log your trophy hunts, you can easily double that time period.

What about hunting the Tahr by helicopter?

Tahr hunting with the help of a helicopter gives hunters access to more remote mountain areas where there are excellent trophy animals. It also gives greater certainty of success if the hunter has limited time in New Zealand to hunt. Hunting with the help of a helicopter can be an exciting alternative with spectacular flights and the possibility of taking an exceptional trophy. It is important to note that the helicopter is only used as a means of transporting and rescuing animals. Hunters are not allowed to shoot, chase or herd animals from the air. Tahr hunters spot their trophy from a helicopter and take them to an area where they can follow their location and stalk on foot. This type of hunting involves an element of caution as you will be exiting a moving aircraft on an unknown mountain ridge.

What should I bring with me on a Tahr hunt?

Most Tahr hunting is done in the higher reaches of the New Zealand Alps. Some of these mountains are covered in 2-3′ high clumps of lush grass and some are rocky outcrops of rock and broken shale. Starting in June, those same mountains could also have snow. Make sure you have good boots that are broken in. Since you may be hunting in the snow, you’ll want your boots to be insulated and waterproof. If you’re hunting a grassy hillside, carry a good pair of alligators. Alligators will keep snow or morning dew from getting your hunting pants wet and cold. Top optics are a must. Buy the best “glass” you can afford. I recommend a binocular belt as it will come in handy when traversing shale and losing rocks. This will prevent your binoculars from bouncing off or worse, hitting a rock. Most Tahr rifle shots will be in the 150 to 250 yard range. A good rangefinder will also come in handy for bow and rifle hunters. At over 300 pounds, the Tahr is a good-sized trophy animal. I would recommend an expanding bullet of 7mm or larger and 164 grain or larger. A good 3000 fps.30 caliber with a 180 grain expandable bullet is ideal for the Tahr. Your rifle should be equipped with a quality scope with 3×9 or 2.5×10 magnification. I would also recommend a good backpack that can carry your rifle or bow. So your hands will be free when you move over the mountain slopes. If you are bowhunting, a good bowhunting guide can usually get you within 40-50 yards of your Tahr on the run. Taking the Tahr trophy is a real achievement with a bow. Allow yourself extra hunting days. Your biggest challenge in Tahr hunting is the nannies who whistle their warning as you stalk your bull Tahr.

How should I mount my Tahr prepared product?

I recommend that all Tahr hunters, especially first time Tahr hunters, really think about how you want your bull Tahr to be clear. The shoulder mount is the most economical mount for grooming, but it doesn’t really do justice to the long hair on Tahr’s mane. Here are tips for your first (or only) Tahr hunting trip.

Have the guide cover it for the whole body. It will be 4 months before you get the cape back to the US and probably a few more months before your taxidermist sends it off to be tanned. This will give you some extra time to decide (and save) whether or not you want to do a shoulder or full body fit. If your guide opts for a shoulder mount in the field, you’re stuck for a choice. Riding a Tahr with a full bull body is spectacular and will be a highlight in any hunter’s cave or trophy room. You can also consider getting a Tahr babysitter. Some outfitters will let you take a sitter for a few hundred dollars in combination with taking a Tahr bull in addition to their standard trophy fee. The Bull & Nanny Tahr is an excellent stand carrier.

Global Sporting Safaris, a hunting consultancy, offers the best Tahr hunting opportunity in New Zealand. Whether you’re a bow hunter, smokehouse loader, crossbow hunter or rifle hunter, we have the locations, guides and experience to take you on the Tahr trophy hunt of a lifetime.
