I love National Public Radio! Listening to NPR in the morning on the way to the office, I often hear about things that are fascinating and that I knew nothing about before.

This morning there was an article about a new astronomical event. Allegedly, in 1979, a star was observed exploding in a Super Nova. But this was no ordinary event. The explosion appears to have been large enough to produce a black hole. And the evidence suggests that this hole, in the last thirty years, has consumed an amount of mass equal to that of our entire planet, which, by these things, is a lot! This appears to be the first time astronomers have been able to witness the birth of a black hole in a normal Super Nova. That’s great!

And that got me thinking about, of course, school assemblies. Kids love this stuff. They love stars and astronomy. And aspects of astronomy and earth science are all through state standards in most states. And yet, there is often a disconnect between children’s innate curiosity in this regard and the teaching of the subject in school.

I recently went on a scouting trip with my son’s scout unit, and we were accompanied by a young scout from a city neighborhood. That light, after all the young men had turned away, but while the adults were still awake and talking around the small fire, this young man got up to see what was going on. It was a clear night and he happened to look up and was immediately struck by the sheer number and brightness of the stars that were visible that night. Growing up in the city, he had no idea of ​​the number of stars that could be seen on a clear dark night outside the city lights. He must have stood there for a good 45 minutes just lost in wonder.
