Struisbaai Harbour Wall – Fishing For Everyone
The Struisbaai harbor wall has always been a special place for anglers of all ages who come to this beautiful seaside village from all over South Africa. During summer weekends and holidays, the wall is generally packed with anglers of all ages enjoying a variety of fishing techniques. The harbor wall is a safe and protected place (in most cases) where a lot of fishing wisdom is shared, experience is gained and love for the sport of fishing is passed from one angler to another.
The Struisbaai harbor wall is an interesting place to fish because it offers such a wide variety of fish species to target. It is the place where the little ones feel the rod and reel for the first time and touch the inflatable fish for the first time. It’s also where the big guys with the big tackle come to hunt for giant rays and giant rays. Amongst all of this you can expect to find goblin, garfish, monkfish, mussels, smaller sharks, thunderheads and colsterte.
Many moms, dads or grandparents took young anglers to this safe fishing spot and introduced them to the sport of rock and board fishing. I wonder how many kids caught their first fish from the harbor wall? Taking a light rod and reel or holding line and using sardine or chokka as bait, these youngsters hone their fishing skills for pufferfish, stripers, colsters, tjor-tjor and maasbankers.
Elf on the wall!!
On many summer evenings, at low tide, the wall resembles a beaded porcupine standing upright as anglers, young and old, gather for the elf run and also hope to get a quick swim. The favorite bait is a whole sardine that is slowly trawled inside the harbor. With an elf around, it usually doesn’t take long for any angler to hit the bag limit.
Garrick / Leervis
From January to March you will see quite a few anglers casting spinners and top water poppers from the rocks in front of the harbor wall hoping for a big strike and a hard fight. Garrick of 5-20kg are usually early morning or late afternoon, feasting on elf in sheltered harbor water. Some anglers prefer to launch a live elf from the right into the bay, hoping for a garrick or cob.
Cob, whiting and spotted bream remain the main target species during the months from November to March, but white mussel, galloen and belman are also landed. Spotted thunderheads are usually fished in shallower water on the 2nd and 3rd masts by trolling very lightly using prawn or sardine tails as bait.
The average size of the piston is between 2 and 5 kg, but quite large pieces over 20 kg are regularly landed. The best time for cob is at night using chock and/or sardine or running a small live mullet or maasbanker. After hooking the plunger, it is best to fish towards the sandy beach between the harbor wall and Die Las as the rock in front of the harbor has ended many a fight by splitting the line.
Sharks and rays
We all know that Struisbaai harbor is home to some massive black rays weighing over 120kg, but it’s the area in front of the harbor wall and to the right where the big black rays are, as well as the smaller blue and stingrays. they catch regularly. Many anglers have overestimated their own skill and abilities only to have a knot unravel, line snap, rod break or reel reel trying to stand up to these bulldozers of the sea.
Stingrays are caught day and night, and a chock or fish head works best for these bottom feeders. Smaller rays are great fun on light tackle, but for big black stingrays you’ll need a rod with a strong backbone, at least .45 line, a decent reel and plenty of energy as most fights last up to 4 hours.
The best time for shark fishing is at night. Some anglers target smaller shark species such as hounds and spotted gull sharks, or even South Africa’s very own Cat in Pajama Sharks, while other anglers pull out large baits for the spotted toothed sharks over 150kg that frequent the area, or hope for a big bronze. or melting a shark on land.
The preferred bait for smaller sharks is live mullet or maasbanker, or fish fillets and chokka, but with the latter, the small fish usually feast and you have to change the bait regularly. For larger sharks, most anglers throw in yellowtail or cape salmon heads or skipjack halves. You can also throw in a large maasbanker or a smaller elf with success.
A few rules
1) Remember, you are not allowed to use a cast net inside the harbor at any time. Rather use small baited hooks to catch mullet or maasbanker.
2) Keep the port wall clean. There is a large drum for all your rubbish.
3) Watch out for children and other anglers when casting bait. No one enjoys a hook in the ear or worse.
4) Be considerate of other anglers. Do not push or throw yourself over their lines.
5) Adhere to size and bag limits. If you’re not going to eat it or use it as bait, throw it back.
6) Rocks are slippery and dangerous when fishing. I don’t think you want to be in the water with a 200 kg cloth!
7) Watch out for water!! Watch the waves.
8) You must not drive a car, bakkie or scooter onto the harbor wall.
The Struisbaai harbor wall will give you endless hours of pure angling pleasure, even when the fish don’t want to bite. The idea for Overberg Angling was born on that wall one night while I was waiting for some action, and the harbor wall holds many other great memories for me, my family and friends. We hope you too will soon enjoy this special fishing spot on the southern tip of Africa.
