The Top 10 Practical Christmas Gifts
For many of us, shopping for Christmas presents has become more of a nightmare than a series of pleasant trips to local malls and shopping spots. Gone are the days when you searched the shops for beautifully packaged soaps and bath salts, the latest bestsellers or a calendar or planner for the next year. Buying Christmas gifts has become more complicated for several reasons:
1. Christmas is big business now.
When I was a kid, people could expect to find an acceptable Christmas gift under $20. Books, paper products and bathroom gift packs have always been good choices if you didn’t have the know-how (or the budget) to buy someone what they really want. Everyone seemed happy with these simple gifts and no one was left seriously in debt after their Christmas shopping.
The nature of Christmas gifts has changed over the years from small generic items to more specific choices. Children are given the latest must-have toys, while teenagers and adults alike are often given gadgets and gizmos such as iPods, cell phones, cameras, computers, sound systems and televisions. The cost of the average gift has risen significantly, with the result that we are often faced with large credit card bills after loading up the card with Christmas gift purchases.
2. Most people already own everything they need.
In the age of ready loans, most people buy things as they need them. We’re not necessarily talking about valuable items like cars or big-screen TVs, but items like technology, household items, appliances, and clothing. Children and teenagers from upper-middle-class families seem to be especially well equipped with “toys” of all kinds. As for adults, as long as they’re making good money, they don’t skimp on life’s little luxuries (as well as necessities), so it’s often hard for you to find a gift they’d really like, but haven’t already bought.
3. Most people have very specific preferences.
Even with small objects you can encounter problems:
- Does the book lover in your family already have the latest bestseller? Has he or she switched from reading legal thrillers to spy novels? The same questions apply to DVDs.
- Do the women in your family still wear the same perfume or have they chosen a new favorite scent?
- If someone uses a calendar or a schedule, which type do they prefer? Many people like a certain page size or layout and won’t use a calendar or journal that is different.
Regardless of the item, do you know what brand or label someone prefers? Most of us are very clear about what we like, so it’s a waste of money to buy something that doesn’t fit into that category.
My top 10 practical Christmas gift ideas
So how do you shop for people who, at least on the surface, have everything they need? Here are my solutions after spending way too much money in the past on Christmas gifts that weren’t appreciated.
1. Give cash.
Giving everyone a $50 bill in a nice Christmas card may seem silly, but it solves a few problems. The recipient can use the money to buy exactly what they want, and you have eliminated all the stress of choosing a gift. Everyone wins. We encouraged this system in our family when the children became teenagers.
2. Set up a system of one gift per person.
Everyone in the family writes a list of 5 choices (within a certain budget) and puts them in a bowl. Each family member then selects one list and buys one item from it. At Christmas, everyone gets something they really want, and the cost is limited to a reasonable limit.
3. Give away gift vouchers.
If you know someone likes a certain store, buy them a gift certificate from that store. Again, they can buy the item they really want.
Unless you know their tastes very well, don’t be tempted to make some other kind of homemade gift that they will feel obligated to keep because you put so much effort into it!
4. Make a gift basket.
Buy an inexpensive basket, some cellophane and ribbon, then fill the basket with a dozen small items. The best choices are bathroom products (check the person’s bathroom first for preferred brands) and food items (check their cupboards and fridge!).
5. Shop for clothes and fashion accessories.
Unless you know someone’s taste well, it is difficult to buy clothes for them. Exceptions are items like dressing gowns and luxury underwear, but always keep the receipt so they can exchange the gift if they wish.
6. Buy a membership or subscription.
No, we don’t mean a gym membership or anything that requires active participation – unless you know the person really wants it. Depending on their taste, you can buy membership to clubs such as wine of the month, coffee of the month, flower of the month and so on. You can also buy a subscription to their favorite magazine or newspaper.
You can purchase a range of swimming, martial arts, etc. classes for the children that they have requested, or you can sponsor an event or outing for them.
7. Buy tickets.
If you know someone is a fan of a certain artist or sport, buying tickets to the next event can be a much appreciated gift. If the tickets are not yet on sale, print the voucher on the computer where your offer is listed. And be sure to follow!
8. Give a travel voucher as a gift.
This is more suitable for a romantic partner or spouse. Book a surprise weekend, but make sure the dates are convenient. If it’s too early to set a date, create a voucher on your computer and honor it.
9. Give the service voucher.
Create a service voucher for items such as an annual spring clean or monthly gardening service for an elderly relative, a series of massages, romantic dinners, etc. for a spouse or partner, etc. You can do this for any task, you can do it yourself or outsource it.
10. Give them exactly what they want.
If you’ve checked with other friends or family members and you know FOR SURE someone has been lusting after a certain item, as long as it’s within your budget, buy it! It’s not often that you get to please someone like this.
So instead of scouring the internet for a comprehensive list of the top 10 Christmas gifts this year, take a step back and think about what the people in your life already have and/or really want. Then choose something that fits their wants and needs, as well as your budget.
Happy Christmas gift shopping!
