Body Language – Ten Stages of Physical Intimacy

One of the things I get asked a lot as a sex appeal and sex confidence coach is, “How do I know when it’s time to take things up a notch?”

Here are ten silent speech steps that lead from the first steps to physical intimacy. Hopefully next time you will know what to look out for and how to react. Remember, with body language you are looking for clusters of behavior, not one isolated movement.

1. Looking at the body. When the formal meeting becomes more friendly, the gaze from the upper business triangle (right eye – left eye – nose and back to the right eye) descends to the lower parts of the face and the upper parts of the body. Be careful with this shift which sometimes involves changing the position of the other person’s body, including moving slightly backwards to capture more of your face.

2. Looking into the eyes. As intimacy increases, so does the amount of eye contact, resulting in those long soulful gazes. Refusing to return eye contact during this sexually charged moment sends the message that you are unsure or disinterested.

3. Hand touching hand. The contact is usually light but long-lasting. It can also be disguised as accidental touching or socially accepted behavior such as putting your hand under the elbow to guide him through a crowded area.

4. The hand touches the shoulder. Once again, this message can be hidden within socially accepted behavior. Up to this point either side can withdraw from the encounter and pretend it didn’t happen. If you are the one who made progress, don’t lose too much pride. But once this quiet talk is crossed, there’s no turning back without a serious blow to your pride.

5. The hand covers the waist. This signals a desire for far greater intimacy. If this is accepted, then things move to the next step pretty quickly…uh-hm!

6. Mouth touching mouth. Once a kiss is exchanged, chemical information about kissing is transmitted from one person to another. Kissing adds another sense to the encounter besides smell – that of taste. Taste is not only related to saliva but also to body temperature.

The temperature of a normal, healthy human being is 37°C (98.4°F), but the skin temperature is always lower than this and varies according to our emotional state. When we are anxious or afraid this temperature drops. If we are relaxed or sexually excited, the temperature rises. During the more intimate stages of sexual intercourse, a drop in body heat sends a message to our sexual partner who interprets it – usually correctly – as a lack of interest, repulsion, discomfort or disapproval. People who are emotionally cold are likely to be physically cold as well. When a man or woman is described as a “hot thing” or we talk about a “warm hug”, it can be almost literally true. As they get more passionate, “hot people” really do get hot and their partner reads this – correctly – as a revelation of their emotional state as well.

7. The hand caresses the head. Usually women reach for the head before men. A hand caressing a head indicates an increase in trust between two people because heads are extremely vulnerable – only those we feel close to can touch without jumping or protesting.

8. The hand caresses the body. It is either through clothing or feeling under it. Some people close their eyes to concentrate more on their senses of temperature and smell. But keeping your eyes open and maintaining eye contact is even more powerful. Not only do you use your senses of sight, touch, sound and taste, but you also use your sense of smell.

During physical intimacy, not only is the sense of smell powerful in eliciting emotions, it also becomes more sensitive to the unique scent of our sexual partner. Smells have a strong effect on the nervous system, reaching the part of the brain responsible for memory and preparing us for pleasant experiences.

The best advice when anticipating this stage of physical intimacy is to use perfume sparingly and let your natural body odor work for you by not covering it up or covering it up with artificial products. The better each of you feels about the other as a person, the easier and happier it will be.

Guys: Let him familiarize himself with it. Women, especially those not taking oral contraceptive pills, have a much better sense of smell and are attracted to a fresh male scent every day.

Ladies: Let him smell you. Encourage him to smell you around your period. This is the closest your body is to estrus or heat.

9. The mouth caresses the body. When this stage is reached, there is a high probability that intercourse will occur – under the right circumstances.

10. The hand caresses the genitals. At this stage, the only remaining stage is the contact between the genitals.

Just two more things about body odor:

1. Sniffing your partner is a very sensual thing to do, however that breeding ground for bacteria with the unpleasant penetrating and pungent stale smell of unwashed body will likely prevent any benefit from the pheromones. To produce more of that clean body odor, take a good shower before starting your workout and skip the shower afterward. After you’ve worked up a sweat, let him/her get to know your natural scent.

2. When two people sniff each other, there is a period – on average it lasts about 18 months to three years – when the chemical is produced in the brain in large quantities and during this period passion and sexual activity are at their peak. What keeps us connected is the individual body odor of another person. But like all good things, the positive effects wear off after a certain time. The divorce rate peaks around four years into marriage.
