The Little Brown Bat, sometimes called the Little Brown Myotis, is scientifically called Myotis lucifugus. Myotis refers to a genus of “mouse-eared” bats. They are among the most common bats in North America. Above they are covered with shiny brown fir, elegant in appearance, with a lighter spot of fir below. They are usually about 3 to 3 ½ inches long and weigh only a fraction of an ounce, between 1/8 and ½ ounce. Needless to say, their name says it all because they sure are small! But although small, their average wingspan will surprise you, as it is more than twice as long as their body length, averaging between 6 and 8 inches wide. But what is even more interesting is that they can live up to 30 years or more, on average between 20 and 30 years specifically.

Little brown bats are microbats, meaning they are nocturnal, mostly small, and primarily feed on insects and other insects. They can consume 50% of their weight in insects! And during pregnancy or lactation they eat even more. Mating season is usually around September and October, but females actually store male sperm for fertilization in the spring, making baby bats born in the summer. Pregnancy generally lasts 50 to 60 days, and after birth it reaches sexual maturity between 6 and 8 months. Females usually give birth to only one cub per year, but sometimes two.

They use a system of sonar, called echolocation, to see objects and structures around them and hunt for prey. They communicate with each other through a complex series of chirps, squeaks and high-pitched calls; most of which cannot be detected by human ears.
