Ten Great Reasons to Homeschool Your Child
1. You will be the number one influence on your child and their formation, instead of learning the latest “dirty word” or being encouraged to have a girlfriend at the very ripe age of 10.
2. It will give you the opportunity to get to know your child better because you will be with him for most of the day. The average child spends about 11,000 hours in the classroom. That doesn’t even include activities and time spent with friends. Children are young for such a short time. Why miss so much time with them?
3. You can let your child learn at his own pace, whether he is progressing or falling behind. Teaching in a traditional school is “one size fits all”. Differences in things like learning styles and a child’s temperament will not be taken into account. If your child is struggling to keep up with math class, he may be put in a “special” classroom with the kids, rather than being allowed to go back a level and relearn some things.
4. Ability to teach your faith and pray during the school day. This is very important. It is a proven fact that many children will lose their faith when faced with an attack on their beliefs day in and day out. Christian teenagers, in interviews, often say that they failed in school like a small, beleaguered minority. They often feel alone in their struggles to live the Christian values of avoiding premarital sex, risky music and videos, pornography, alcohol and drugs. Why throw your lambs to the wolves so early. Keep them at home as long as possible to build a solid foundation to weather future storms. Which brings me to #5….
5. Being able to decide who your child’s friends are. If you homeschool for any length of time, you will seek out and find like-minded families and friends. I can’t say enough about how this has helped one of my more rebellious children in his ability to mature and grow through his teenage years. All of his homeschooling friends were raised with roughly the same kinds of values so there’s no “But Mom, everyone else is watching it, doing it, etc.” Also, there is “positive peer pressure” from these friends. If my son started talking about drugs or bragging about watching porn, those friends wouldn’t approve and it wouldn’t be considered cool.
6. Prettier, more pleasant children. I hate to say it, but it’s true. Strangers tell me all the time how “well-behaved” my children are. It’s not that I’m such a good mother or that I’m constantly nagging them about their manners (although I do believe I need to teach them), but it’s to remove what I call the “Lord of the Flies influence”. When children of the same age spend 6-7 hours a day, five days a week for nine months of the year together, unless constantly monitored and corrected by adults, their behavior can be somewhat barbaric and out of control.
7. No worries about bullies. Children often do not say what is happening in the classroom. My blood boils at the thought of a bully being mean to my little one or stealing his glasses. Why put your kids through that, especially when they’re young?
8. No worries about sexual abuse. Much attention has been paid to sexual abuse by Catholic priests; however, the problem of sexual abuse in the public school system receives little attention and is a serious and troubling problem. Here is an article on the AP report
9. More freedom to express creativity and be yourself. Some schools encourage the arts more than others and find it worthwhile to spend resources on the humanities. My now 19 year old son is an incredibly gifted artist and photographer. Being homeschooled, he had the freedom to pursue his natural talents unfettered. When he was younger, he had an affinity for drawing monsters and weapons (mostly medieval). I know for a fact that his weapon drawings would not be allowed or appreciated in a traditional school.
10. The ability to embark on a learning adventure with your children. Who knew learning could be so much fun? I used to hate history because it was so boring. I remember falling asleep more than once during American history class in high school! It wasn’t until I started homeschooling my children that I became enamored with history. What a fascinating topic!
Don’t get me wrong, there will be frustrating days and days where both you and the kids won’t make it to “school” at all; however, you will have many fun and interesting learning adventures together. Imagine curling up on the couch together every morning so you can read aloud to your kids, instead of forcing them to catch the bus every morning. Imagine spending a beautiful autumn afternoon on a nature walk with notebooks in hand for some observation.
Homeschooling a child will be work and will require effort, but the rewards and special memories you make are greater than you can imagine and will last a lifetime.
