Estrogen – Is This Natural Hormone Slowly Killing Us?

Too much estrogen is a big problem for women and men and too many people have too much. Excess estrogen can accelerate aging, worsen prostate health, increase body fat and muscle atrophy, increase hair loss, and cause sexual dysfunction. Women with excess unmetabolized estrogen are exposed to a higher risk of breast and uterine cancer, obesity and low sex drive.

In both men and women, fat cells store large amounts of aromatase, an enzyme that creates estrogen. The higher your body fat percentage, the more estrogen you can produce. This causes more fat cells to form, which in turn creates more estrogen! This cycle can get out of hand.

In men, aromatase signals the pituitary gland and testicles to secrete less luteinizing hormone (LH), thereby significantly slowing testosterone production. High levels of estrogen increase the production of a protein called sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which competes with testosterone receptor sites, literally rendering testosterone powerless. Estrogen also causes the liver to produce more testosterone-binding carrier proteins. Free, unbound testosterone is the only active form that can easily enter the brain, muscles, sex organs and fat cells.

Testosterone deficiency

Free testosterone makes up only a very small fraction of total testosterone in men and women. Low free testosterone in men increases body fat, reduces sex drive and can cause depression and erectile dysfunction. This also becomes a vicious cycle. Men have less energy and less confidence. Then they can be stressed, eat more, gain weight and have less interest in sex.

Early symptoms of aging in men, the so-called Andropause. Excessive estrogen levels have been identified as the main culprit!

Excess estrogen ‘signals’ increased production of SHBG, causing a further decrease in free testosterone. Excess estrogen in men occurs with obesity, excessive alcohol use, smoking, lack of exercise, and exposure to non-bioidentical estrogens in the environment. Pesticides create a form of bad estrogen, concentrated in meat and dairy products.

Doses of BPA found in microwavable plastics, metal food and beverage container liners, plastic baby bottles (only glass is safe) seep into people’s water and blood causing a form of insulin resistance that mimics estrogen. Either a high-fat diet according to Nathan Pritikin, one of the great researchers of the twentieth century with whom I worked from 1979 to 1981, or minute amounts of plastic chemicals (usually considered safe by EPA standards) cause an allergic reaction, inflammation and diabetes, according to Dr. Theron Randolph, author of An Alternative Approach to Allergies. These increases in synthetic estrogens have been shown to cause dangerous changes in pancreatic cells associated with diabetes. Diabetes is drastically increasing in our country and in the world. Diabetics tragically suffer from an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, impotence and amputated limbs.

Some research suggests that hair loss and baldness may be linked to a high-fat diet. A diet rich in fat stimulates estrone, which turns into bad estrogen. DHT (dihydroxytestosterone) can cause hair loss. However, testosterone can actually help or improve scalp hair, provided estrogen levels are in order. DHT should make up one quarter to one third of the total androgens.

Excess estrogen blocks testosterone receptors and DHT becomes dominant. Adipose tissue is full of aromatase enzymes that convert testosterone into estrogen. The best approach to combating estrogen dominance in both men and women is to exercise, improve your diet, and take supplements that reduce estrogen production.

Losing body fat reduces estrogen conversion. In men, the symptoms of andropause recede, and in women, estrogen-dominant symptoms decrease.

Men — Reduce estrogen intake

More than half of men over the age of 50 have an enlarged prostate. Early signs include hesitancy to urinate, increased frequency, dribbling, and decreased urinary force and flow. If left untreated, an enlarged prostate can lead to sexual dysfunction and impotence.

A study by the University of California found that impotence is mainly due to high estrogen. Another study elsewhere of 320 men who were surgically treated for severely enlarged prostates found higher estrogen levels and lower testosterone than men with normal prostates.

In a Japanese study, men without enlarged prostates had higher testosterone levels! In addition, men whose prostates were enlarged had higher levels of estrogen. In this study, scientists concluded that unmetabolized estrogen is related to prostate size and volume.

Many urologists treat patients with prostate disease by suppressing testosterone and increasing estrogen. Estrogen-suppressing drugs also reduce the beneficial forms of estrogen and do not do enough to clear the bad forms of estrogen (16aOHE, 4OHE). In my opinion, metabolizing and eliminating excess estrogen should be the emphasis and this can be done with natural phyto-chemical herbs, from vegetable extracts that target the bad estrogens while restoring the good forms of estrogen and testosterone.

Diindolylmethane (DIM), derived from broccoli, cauliflower, kale, buckthorn, choya, Napa cabbage and Brussels sprouts, promotes beneficial estrogen metabolism. DIM increases ‘good’ estrogens, which then cause SHBG to bind, thereby improving free testosterone levels, while dramatically reducing ‘bad’ estrogen. SMOKE, together with Chrysin (passion flower), (Passiflora incarnata), in a liposomal cream, clears estrogen. It is especially useful for men on testosterone replacement therapy or women on estrogen replacement therapy.

DIM-Chrysin combinations reduce the risk of prostate cancer by up to 41% in men. They also reduce the risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer in women. Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is another vegetable extract that is beneficial in estrogen metabolism. Indole-3-carbinol works best if there is enough hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Calcium-D-glucarate or its metabolite, D-glucuronolactone, can help detoxify estrogen. Apples and other fresh fruits and vegetables have small amounts. In addition, calcium-D-glucarate has positive effects on reducing cancer-causing byproducts.

Diet and natural herbs may prove safer and more cost-effective than some prescription drugs that block aromatase. Natural estrogen clearing methods appear to cause less body inflammation and less free radical damage, reducing the toxic effects of estrone metabolites while preserving the benefits of estradiol and the ‘good’ 2-hydroxyestrone.

I encourage physicians to add these important substances to their patients’ diets and hormone regimens.

Whole food

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits, with concentrated plant extracts, combined with a short, intense exercise program, can help you control bad estrogen. Many of the special phytochemicals are found naturally in raw vegetables from the Cruciferae group, such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, Napa cabbage, turnips, rutabagas, mustard greens, and chard. However, up to 2 lbs. of raw cruciferous vegetables every day, are essential to achieve the estrogen-clearing benefits. I suggest you use a blender (not a juicer or juicer, as you want to keep the healthy fiber) and mix raw cruciferous vegetables with some tasty fiber-rich fruits like berries or pears. Vegetables, such as peppers and fruits, rich in vitamin C, reduce the aromatase enzyme responsible for converting too much estrogen from testosterone. Use water rather than juice as a base, along with frozen fruits and vegetables, to give the drink a “smoothie” texture. A blender usually comes with a 48- to 60-ounce pitcher, which will provide nearly 2-4 pounds of raw plant material in your drink throughout the day.

Food suplements

As suggested, most people will need to supplement their diet with concentrates of DIM (diindolylmethane), chrysin, D-glucuronolactone and other important natural phytochemicals. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided because they can inhibit the liver’s ability to break down estrogen. Supplements containing broccoli and cauliflower extracts can boost the metabolism of excess estrogen, while red grape skin extract and resveratrol can improve liver P450 function to help clear excess estrogen.

Di-methyl-glycine (DMG) is a methyl group donor that aids detoxification. It helps the liver to clear harmful estrogens and lactic acid after exercise. DMG has been reported to improve sexual function, erectile ability and blood oxygenation to the genitals. Improved mental function and anti-aging benefits have also been reported with DMG.

The phytoestrogens in soy and wild yam are also worth noting. Meat and animal products are associated with an increased incidence of stroke and dementia. I believe that soy and vegetable products (instead of meat and animal products) are prudent!

DHT studies

DHT must be in balance with testosterone. dr. Edmond De Vroey, founder of the Longevity Institute, has been using DHT gel for over 20 years to maintain prostate health by applying DHT topical gel. Applied directly to the skin, DHT does not convert to estrogen. Instead, topically applied DHT reduces estrogen levels.

dr. Ron Rothenberg, professor of medicine at the University of California/San Diego, agrees with me that the benefits of DHT for increasing sexuality and strength are not as pronounced as testosterone or testosterone combined with estrogen-metabolizing herbs.

In a clinical study by Dr. Wang and colleagues, DHT improved total androgen levels, while significantly reducing estradiol levels, within 14 days. Estradiol is considered the most dominant estrogen.

dr. Eugene Shippen conducted meta-reviews, showing that testosterone and DHT can actually protect the prostate.

dr. Schaison showed that patients with reduced gonadal function became more masculine, developed more muscle mass and improved sexual function, with DHT topical gel.

Using DHT gel for 2 years, Dr. De Lignieres reported that men, ages 55 to 70, improved sexual function and reduced prostate size by an average of 15%.

DHT requires a prescription and is usually only available in Europe, but we use an all-natural cream with bioidentical hormones that is applied under the scrotum and used in the morning after showering. It is a well-known fact that scrotal tissue has enzymes in the skin that can increase DHT production in the presence of androgens. This cream with natural androgens allows rapid absorption of testosterone to youthful levels and conversion to DHT to reduce estrogen.

As with all androgen replacement therapy, it is necessary to monitor for signs of excessive DHT levels, such as oily skin, acne, excessive hair growth, aggressiveness or excessive sexuality.

A University of Southern California study found that 8 of 27 men who took finasteride for enlarged prostates developed tumors within a year, despite the drug reducing DHT by 67%. It is my opinion that unidentified elevated estrogen levels in the prostate may be the problem, not DHT. Although finasteride lowers DHT, it can cause impotence. In contrast, the beta sitosterol in saw palmetto may be more effective in restoring urine flow, without impotence. Beta sitosterol improves DHT metabolism and androgen receptor binding, while finasteride does not. Although finasteride can reduce DHT in the prostate by up to 80%, it only reduces prostate size by about 20%. Some 60-65% of men have no improvement with finasteride! More than 5% of finasteride users suffer from decreased libido, impotence and ejaculation disorders.

It is important to note that removing all estrogen from adult men is not good! The goal of the estrogen reduction program is to achieve optimal levels for complete male hormonal balance. When the “bad” estrogens are elevated, they prevent the hormones of youth, your good estrogens, testosterone, human growth hormone, DHEA, etc., from being at the proper level, potentially leading to disease and premature aging, and disability.
