The Benefits of Running to Keep You Fit and Healthy
Running is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep fit and healthy. As children we were natural runners because we needed an outlet to use up all that excess energy that children have.
When we grow up, we lose the habit of running, unless someone is chasing us. For many of us, most of our time is spent sitting at a desk staring at a computer screen. Instead of burning energy, these excess calories turn into fat that we deposit around the stomach, hips and thighs.
If it’s been a long time since you last ran, it’s wise to take it easy at the start. It’s not a good idea to rush into running a mini-marathon because you’ll do more harm than good. Take it slowly and gradually. If your body is not used to running then, the best way to build your endurance is to start walking every day. Start with 15 minutes a day and gradually increase the pace until you are walking at a brisk pace for 30 minutes a day. If you can keep this up for 4 weeks, your body will be in a better condition to handle the extra effort required to run.
I’m not a fan of long distance running. In my opinion, it can do more harm to your body and health in the long run. That constant pounding on your knees and joints plus the long-term strain on your cardiovascular system can actually weaken your body. Recent research has shown that a more effective and safer way to build your strength and endurance is short periods of moderately intense aerobic exercise such as running or walking for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Even light activities around the house such as running up and down the stairs, gardening or a brisk walk with the dog can have enormous positive effects on your health and well-being.
So why should you take up running, I hear you ask. Well, running has many benefits, and below are just a few of them:
- Lose weight by burning those extra calories.
- Reduce your chances of getting heart disease.
- More energy and agility.
- It strengthens the muscles of the lower part of the body.
- Escape from home for sun and fresh air.
- It’s free, no gym membership required.
Invest in a good pair of running shoes and get out there and start running like you were a kid again.
