Potty Training Tips For Your Toddler – Part One
Who said potty training is hard? I mean seriously, we were truly blessed. This baby phase was really easy for us. Literally… On the other hand, my husband and I don’t even remember our son JeNoah being a baby. It’s funny how that happens.
It’s as if he woke up one morning and said “I’m going potty today!”. What seemed to happen happened so quickly. I didn’t realize at the time that it was the LAST box when I bought the last box of diapers. I was happy and yet sad at the same time.
Signs that they are ready to start potty training:
- Your child is starting to take off his diaper.
- Waking up with a completely dry diaper. THAT!!! This means that they are in the initial stages of learning to control their bowels.
- Can understand and follow instructions. You can say go potty and they will know what you are talking about. This is a sure sign that your child is ready for potty training.
When my husband and I realized he was ready, we let him go FUN start. Don’t worry too much about the potty. Just try to relax and have fun with it. Here are some steps for a quick and easy transition.
Steps for easier potty training:
- Take your child shopping and let him choose his own underwear. make a BIG deal about these. They feel so proud wearing their big girl or boy underwear. My son would say “choo choo, or Diego.” He wanted to wear them. I really think the character underwear made the difference, not just plain.
- Buy a small chair.
- Wear underwear on your child at all times during the day. Except at night and during sleep. Face it, they will have accidents. Small children are so busy that they forget to use the bathroom. Bring an extra cover, shoes, socks, whatever you need if needed. Take extra clothes with you wherever you go. Pull-ups are like diapers to me. They are more for parents and I believe they prolong the wearing process. Now we used pull-ups at night. During the day, absolutely do not use them, even when you go to the store. Or in the car. It really made a difference and potty training seemed to go faster.
- Cheer, clap and dance when they use the potty. Every time my son went we would cheer, dance and clap. He loved it and it encouraged him to continue. Within a few days he started using the potty on his own. He just went to the bathroom all by himself and would leave. He was so great and I was so proud!!
I hope some of these tips help your little one adjust to the process. It can be scary for them. Night time and nap time are other barriers to potty weaning, so stay tuned for my article on those. I’m a stay at home mom and I’m passing along tips that have worked for me. These methods may or may not be effective for your toddler. You really have nothing to lose by trying. I wish you and your toddler the best of luck during this potty training process. Cheers!!!
