Symptoms of High-Functioning Autism
My first memory of autism is watching the movie ‘Rain Man’ and thinking about what happened to that brilliant child on the screen. On the one hand, so talented, and on the other, so limited. My next close encounter with the disorder occurred when my daughter became a teacher for children with disabilities between the ages of seven and ten. I still remember that night when she came home from school, I looked at her face and knew something tragic had happened. She shared with me her experience with one of her students who was diagnosed with autism. Now it brings home knowledge and awareness that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. As with all critical phenomena, there is no single description of the disorder or its cure.
Autism is actually a key condition of a spectrum of disorders, all of which share common characteristics and manifest in very different ways in each individual.
Autism is a major disability that affects communication and interaction with other people, but also with the world.
The degree of autism varies from severe to mild, but the consequences are always serious. Accordingly, someone with autism may have severe autism with severe additional learning difficulties, while others may have mild degrees of autism with normal or high levels of intelligence. Most people with autism have learning difficulties. Their language development varies greatly. Some may have very good speech, although they lack full comprehension, while a significant proportion of people with autism will not have spoken language. Many may be hypersensitive to noise, light, touch or smell and react poorly to pain.
The specific causes of autism are not known; however, we do know that it is a biologically based disorder that affects brain development. Patterns of disordered behavior do not appear until the child is between 18 months and 3 years old. Sometimes there is a period of apparently normal development, and then, between 18 months and 3 years, the child appears to be regressing and losing skills. We know that parents are not to blame for autism, but are actually the child’s greatest resource.
As for the common signs of autism – they are social, communication and behaviour. Autism manifests itself in the social environment, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, imagination development and resistance to change in routine.
Here are examples of such behaviors. The affected child shows indifference; he or she joins in activities with others only if an adult insists and helps. Interactions in social settings are one-sided. He shows his need with an adult’s hand, does not play with other children, constantly talks about only one topic, shows bizarre behavior. Echolalia, when a child copies words, is very common. Laughing or giggling occurs at the most inappropriate times. There is no eye contact, variety is not the spice of life and there is a lack of creative play (pretending).
Some of the affected children can do some things very well and very quickly, but they never involve social interaction. Early diagnosis of such a condition is essential to minimize problems and maximize a person’s full potential.
Whether the explosion in autism since 1980 has been driven by our ability to diagnose it or by actual changes in fetal and infant development caused by chemical overdoses, I cannot say. I do know, however, that we have been able to register 77,000 artificial food additives since 1940 and that the average American ingests 14 pounds of chemicals a year through their food. Our bodies cannot ignore the results of these statistics. A simple reality check: if you wouldn’t put something in your aquarium, don’t put it in your body.
It may not eliminate autism, but it will certainly help our health and the world.
In the meantime, I would like to invite you to get more information about early detection of the disorder and ways to control the situation.
