Should You Use Chlorine Free Baby Diapers?

I have to admit, as a new parent, too many things didn’t worry me too much. Okay, I’ll admit it though: I’m pretty laid back. In fact, I have friends who would definitely classify me as under-worried – things don’t phase me even when they should. However, as a seasoned parent (thirteen years already!) I have found that some things just trigger my mommy instincts and turn me on. For example, I’ve had quite the diaper journey, using just about everything in the book from cloth, standard disposables, and chlorine-free baby diapers. I learned a lot along the way, becoming an expert on all things diaper related. As a new parent, making this decision can seem confusing. Let me help you understand the issues involved.

Disposable diapers

I will openly admit that I started my parenting journey pretty much following the crowd. I’ve always breastfed, but even that barely qualifies, because it’s pretty standard in my environment. However, all diapers are disposable, all the time. So that’s what I did. I just have to come right out and say that I love the convenience they offer. What I hate is the cost and the environmental impact. Plus, my first son just couldn’t figure out how to potty train. Understand – the kid didn’t know when he was wet! These issues led me to explore options such as chlorine-free baby diapers and fabrics.

Cloth diapers

I started my foray into cloth diapers when my oldest child was about a year and a half old. We were classic newlyweds and, well, just plain broke. Plus, I had just started sewing seriously, so it made sense. I have used cloth diapers with all my kids over the years, as well as chlorine free baby diapers which we will talk about later, but there are definitely issues, the biggest being that a few of my kids have very sensitive skin. Exposure to so much moisture leads to rash problems. For me, this option is one of the best compromises. I don’t have to deal with the hassle (however small) of packing, changing and washing cloth diapers, but I still care about environmental priorities. Plus, no more rashes! I can’t tell you how sad it is to deal with constant diaper rash. I just can’t do that to my baby, so the fabric had to go forever with one of my kids. Some parents, however, feel that using a combination makes sense. For example, a cloth at home and chlorine-free baby diapers for nighttime and outings. This keeps costs down while still providing the convenience and flexibility you need. Plus, they keep my baby dry but not so absorbent that I have trouble potty training.
