Six Basic Steps to Eliminate Cat Behavioral Problems

Does it sometimes seem to you that your cat has become mean instead of the lovely kitten it used to be? Sometimes when kittens grow up, they can be mean and mean at their worst. But even for the most annoying cat behavior problems, there is usually still a cure for the behavior.

Below are six of the most common cat behavior problems and some of the solutions I’d like to share with you that seem to work best for my pets.

1. Vacuum your furniture and carpet. It’s only natural that cats need to sharpen their claws. Their claws never stop growing, and what they actually do when they sharpen their claws is remove the outer layer of the claw. In most cases, I have found that people will simply cut off the claws of a cat with this problem. Personally, I don’t advocate it at all. In my opinion, there’s always a chance that even a house cat might accidentally end up outside one day. And in that case, if you remove your cat’s claws, then you are probably depriving it of its primary form of defense.

Maybe before declawing your cat, why not try getting a scratching stick instead. If you can’t get your cat to use a scratching post, one solution I’ve found is to try hanging a dirty sock on the post. Use a dirty sock that belongs to someone in the family that your cat loves the most so that it smells familiar to your pet (you can take it off after about a day). You can also sprinkle catnip over the scratching area or—this is weird, but it works—chicken bouillon powder. The idea is to make the cat feel friendly enough to the scratcher to attack it.

In the meantime, make your cat’s favorite scratching areas less appealing. For example, sprinkle fresh lemon juice on those areas. Or you can wrap them or cover them with aluminum foil (nails on a chalkboard, anyone?). Do anything that will clean the area as well as eradicate any cat odor. If possible, another option would be to close the door to that area so that those places are inaccessible to the cat.

2. Elimination outside the litter box. Could it be your fault or the cat’s fault? I have found that many cats will not use a litter box that is too dirty. If you think this might be a problem, start changing the litter box about twice as often as you currently do. You can also be quick about cleaning all the places the cat goes, spraying those areas well with Lysol or a similar disinfectant with a pleasant strong smell. You can also try placing the litter box in a more attractive place for the cat; the bathroom, for example. If it’s not in too disgusting a place, you can put the litter box in the place your cat has chosen too, just to emphasize. As a last resort, put bleach, safely, on those spots and cover the area with aluminum foil.

3. People with claws. I have found that cats generally do this because they are afraid for some reason. If this is the case, you should consider whether it is the fault of the cat or the people around it. For example, if you have a cat that is generally afraid of children, try exposing it to small children until it calms down. Do not allow the child to roam freely around the cat. Have your child sit on your lap or next to you while feeding Kitty treats.

Not all cats are afraid. In some cases, they are simply mean to certain people. The only thing you can do about it is remove the cat from the situation. When the cat starts scratching or growling, pick it up and take it to the bathroom until your guest leaves. In most cases, this usually happens to a guest, often one who has pets. If it’s a family member, try cat repellent or lemon juice to keep the cat away, followed by acclimatization to get it used to the other person. If all this fails, you may have no choice but to declawed the cat.

4. Feasting. Siamese cats do this by nature and you may not be able to get them to stop. But other cats do this because they are hungry, tired, sick, or to let you know that she has done something good. There’s not much you can do about it, unfortunately. If you think she is hungry, then feed her as soon as possible and refuse to feed her when she is hungry. Of course, your cat won’t understand what you’re doing, but it will almost certainly give up once it realizes that it doesn’t benefit it. If it’s being pushed because it’s being pushed, you should fix it. For other problems with eating, try to ignore it and keep it as far away from you as possible.

5. Spraying. Normally, male cats do this to mark territory, and they usually do this when they feel threatened. In most cases this is done whenever they are threatened by dogs or small children or when they are around other male cats. There is little you can do about it other than neutering the cat. Don’t punish your cat for doing this because the cat won’t understand it at all.

6. Running outside. Domestic cats are very curious about the outside world. The first thing you should do is to be more careful and not let your cat escape outside. But you can also try to get your cat used to being outside by getting a cat leash and walking it or by carrying it in your arms when you go outside. Once your cat knows what’s out there, it’s more likely that next time she’ll be less curious and less eager to go outside. And this is especially true if you ever expose your cat to snow or wet conditions.
