The Boy Scouts of America – Character and Leadership

One of the first things that comes to mind when we think of a Boy Scout is a good boy, a boy with good values and morals or a boy who helps old ladies cross the street or a boy who can save someone’s life with his amazing first aid skills. This is not an entirely inaccurate impression. Serving others is a core value of BSA. Scout is much more than that though. He is an ordinary child like any other child, but there is much more to him than meets the eye. A Boy Scout goes through a wonderful experiential development that can only be gained through membership in the Boy Scouts of America. The BSA is an educational program authorized by the United States Congress. In 2010, the program will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Being registered with a local group and regularly participating in a program offers boys the opportunity to grow and learn things that are not usually taught at school, church, on the playground or even at home. The program is unique. It is progressive and boys move up the ladder in rank, skills and maturity. It develops a boy during his formative years when he is most impressionable. It teaches responsibility, leadership, self-sufficiency, moral values, patriotism and respect for oneself, others and the environment. Leadership is learned through work. The units are led and led by boys. Adult leaders are there only in the capacity of supervisors. Scouts learn how to lead by being patrol leaders and having roles within the troop. They make all the decisions about their program and what they want to do and where they want to go. The program builds a boy’s character that will last a lifetime. BSA teaches boys to do the right thing.

A boy must be at least 11 years old or in 5th grade or higher to join Scouting. How does the boy get involved? That’s easy. He and his parents or guardians can locate a local group and attend one of the weekly meetings and meet the boys and the scout leader. He may find that he already knows some kids from school or the neighborhood. Troops meet weekly at a church or school or a community place such as a library. They wear a uniform that signifies the unity of the organization.

What happens at the meeting? a lots of! The kids work to move up the ranks which involves learning and practicing all kinds of interesting skills that boys love to do anyway. They play games, plan camp menus, work on achievement badges and more. The merit badge program allows youth to explore 120 different skill and knowledge areas and is an important and essential tool of the character building program. Scouts can learn many things from environmental studies, astronomy, marine biology, swimming to communications and outdoor survival skills. Merit badges build confidence and teach goal setting while introducing boys to activities that often lead to career choices

Boy Scout troops enjoy monthly camps whether it’s on a Boy Scout reservation, a state park, or in the mountain wilderness. Being outdoors in all kinds of weather is where most of the ‘development’ takes place. Scouts learn that they can be self-sufficient survivors and leaders no matter what nature throws at them. Pitching a tent or building a shelter from fallen branches or even improvising with a garbage bag teaches the boy resilience and basic survival skills.

The BSA motto is: Be prepared. Boys are taught how to be prepared for anything – a ten-mile hike, an emergency at home, a severe storm, and more. They learn to remain calm in the face of danger and how to put their leadership skills to good use in any situation – even at the age of 11. It doesn’t just come naturally. Scouts practice, study and prepare. We have all seen and heard about the heroic efforts of Boy Scouts and how their quick thinking and focused actions saved a life or even how the Boy Scout himself survived being lost in the woods for several days. It really does happen and we are often amazed when it does. There were even many younger Cub Scouts in the news who took the lead in emergencies as they were also taught some basic basic preparedness skills such as what to do if their friend falls through the ice or what to do if their house catches fire. A recent story was about a Cub Scout who saves his suffocating younger sibling. Heroes? Not to them. It’s the right thing for a scout.

The Boy Scouts of America have a lot to offer today’s youth. It is a family program in which parents are always welcome and encouraged to get involved. It is a special place where a boy and his family feel a sense of belonging and often make lifelong friends. Helping young boys grow into the respected leaders of tomorrow is and always has been the goal of the BSA.
