Obesity is a major health problem in almost every corner of the world today. Did you know that there are 750 million overweight people in the world, and 250 million of them are from the US. 2/3 of America is overweight or obese. Obesity is responsible for 325,000 deaths annually. People all over the world spend billions of dollars a year to buy various products that claim to burn fat and thus provide a solution to obesity. But has obesity decreased? Definitely not!
Childhood obesity is a growing concern today. Children today are more and more overweight than 10-15 years ago. Obesity is the main cause of serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
Modern technology is the main cause of childhood obesity today. Children are more and more inclined to sit and play with computers, play stations and be in front of the TV much longer than before. They tend to be indoors more than going out and doing some physical activity. In an earlier era, children would be more physically active and play outdoors, thus providing healthy exercise and this was the main reason for maintaining a healthy body weight.
Another reason is junk food. There is much more junk food available today than 10-15 years ago. Now we are used to instant food and our children always get this food. But in fact, children should be given more and more whole grains and more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Children are too busy these days and sometimes they don’t drink enough water. They should be encouraged to drink at least 5-6 glasses of water a day. Water helps to increase metabolism in children and thus helps to burn fat more efficiently.
