Conquer Your Fear of Spiders

There was a story on the BBC Scotland website the other day about how a giant spider was found in a shipping container at a manufacturing company in the west of Scotland. The Huntsman spider is usually found in Australia, Africa and Asia, but this creature was found in Dumbarton. As if to illustrate that this is a spider beast, the BBC saw fit to publish a photo of the Huntsman spider with the article, resulting in those who fear spiders turning away from their computer/laptop/mobile phone screens in horror. It’s undisputed who could have been more frightened upon its discovery – the person who encountered it or the poor spider who found himself thousands of miles from home and in Dumbarton, of all places…

Fear of spiders is a fairly common phobia that hypnotherapy can help with. Like most phobias, it doesn’t target anyone in particular. I’ve been asked if I can help a range of people who have a fear of spiders, from big chunky bricks to young teenage girls, one of whom recently told me she got her dad to ‘deal’ with the spiders in her house.

A recent example was ‘S’, a man in his early 30s. He works in the construction industry and has been in a happy relationship with his partner for almost five years. He is the proud father of a two-year-old boy. You might think that S would be happy with his life and, for the most part, he is. However, there is one issue that he struggles with and deals with throughout his life – his fear of spiders.

S has always been afraid of spiders, but always thought his fear was just silly. He has no qualms about dealing with other issues, for example he and his partner recently had a problem with mice in their home, and last year there was a wasp infestation that scared his partner off. Not so S, who took it in his stride. However, when dealing with a seemingly harmless spider, S will run to the other side of the room, calling for help and shouting instructions to whoever is in his company to ‘get rid of’ it.

He approached me as a ‘last resort’ (actually, it’s not as bad as it sounds – hypnotherapy is still a relatively ‘young’ profession) He tried other methods, but without success. First of all, I told him he wasn’t ‘stupid’. And I congratulated him for taking the first steps towards improving his life. We have arranged a convenient date and time for an initial consultation – I offer a free consultation to determine if my clients will be receptive to hypnotherapy.

S told me he wasn’t sure if hypnotherapy would help him heal his fear. This was perfectly understandable. He explained that he had always associated hypnotherapy with swinging stopwatches and making people dance around the room thinking they were demented. Part of the initial consultation is to explain the entire hypnotherapy process to my client. I assured S that he would be conscious and aware, in control at all times and certainly not doing anything he didn’t want to do.

S told me that he was simply frightened by the sight of ‘a big hairy spider with long legs and the way they scurry across the floor’. He went on to explain his reasoning. ‘They appear out of nowhere, scurrying across the floor usually while I’m in a relaxed state. Their sticky webs are everywhere. And I’ve read that spiders use their own bodily fluids to capture their humble prey, before tucking the poor beast inside the thing and injecting it with some noxious substance to dissolve its insides…’

If you have a fear of spiders, this is probably too much information. But bear with me, it’s worth quantifying S’s thoughts. I asked him how long he had the phobia and if he could remember the first time he was afraid of spiders. He explained that he was about 10 years old and was home alone while his mother went to the store. He was lying on the couch and was not feeling well when he saw a spider crawling along the bottom of the fireplace. He crawled slowly but steadily and S froze, unable to move, until his mother returned.

That seems to have been the catalyst for his fear that has followed him ever since. Reduced to its basic form, S’s subconscious mind controls him through his experience of seeing that spider years ago (sorry, S – you’re not that old) When he sees a spider, his conscious mind – the one we all have that allows us to perform his normal daily tasks like getting up in the morning, getting dressed, driving the car to work – he tells him it’s just a spider, a harmless little beast that doesn’t interest him and is probably scared, so he frantically runs across the floor to avoid it. S’s subconscious mind, however, keeps returning to that incident when he was ten years old and feeds on his fear of spiders. So far…

The more I was able to talk to S’s subconscious mind – and it took several sessions lasting no more than an hour each time – the more his fear of spiders disappeared. After a few short weeks, hypnotherapy helped him. S is no longer afraid of spiders and when she sees one crawling on the floor, she accepts it for what it does.

The life of fear has come to an end.
