Stuttering in Two-Year-Olds: Eating Their Way to Stuttering

Stuttering in two-year-olds is largely to blame for the child’s development. Stuttering is common in children aged 2 to 5 years and should last for 5 to 6 months. About 60 percent of children who stutter suffer from simple dysfluency and will recover in due course. Those whose stuttering persists after a long period should undergo speech therapy to correct this problem.

There are numerous factors that contribute to a child’s stuttering. The usual suspects are genes (if a parent stutters, the child is likely to stutter), gender (boys stutter more than girls), and stress (a sudden change in a child’s life, such as the birth of a new baby in the family, can cause stuttering). Few people are aware that stuttering can also be caused by the food they eat. Just as some medications can cause it, stuttering can be caused by ingredients in food. According to studies, chemicals found in some processed foods may be the reason/s behind the development of stuttering in children. These chemicals include:

Nitrates

Nitrates commonly used as preservatives play a role in stunting children’s development. Since stuttering in two-year-olds is one of the manifestations of developmental disorders, processed foods such as hot dogs, ham and other cold cuts must be avoided.

Salicylates

Salicylates are found in plant foods and are used in the production of medicines, preservatives and flavorings. Parents have reported cases of stuttering in children that worsened after eating certain fruits or vegetables and other foods containing salicylates.

Sulfites

Sulfites are used as preservatives in many processed foods. According to some parents, a two-year-old’s stuttering worsened after eating sulfite-containing foods such as hot dogs and bacon. When sulfites were removed from the diet, the stuttering stopped.

Benzoates in medicines

Benzoates in medicines such as those for cough and asthma have been found to increase stuttering in two-year-olds and other young children. Parents also report that children become sluggish, withdrawn and unusually quiet while taking these drugs. Normal behavior and speech return after discontinuation of benzoate-containing medications.

Although many parents report that their children’s stuttering is caused or exacerbated by certain foods or chemicals in food such as dairy, wheat, nitrates, and salicylates, current medical literature does not support this. The effects of these food ingredients also vary with each individual. Consumption of the above-mentioned chemicals can cause stuttering in two-year-olds, as well as worsen the child’s behavior, which is confirmed by some parents. Therefore, to prevent this, it is advised to eliminate food or chemical food triggers from the diet.
