Does Late Or Early Ovulation Influence My Ability to Get Pregnant Or My Baby’s Gender? My Opinion
Recently I started getting this question more and more often. Some of the women who write to me take my advice about using ovulation predictors to make sure you know exactly when you ovulate. Many of these same women are somewhat surprised to find that although they ovulate, it occurs either much earlier or much later than the time frame they have always assumed it would.
For example, some women find that they ovulate much earlier than mid-cycle and in fact a woman told me she didn’t get a positive until day 24. Also someone told me that she got positive as early as day 7. These women will often ask if being early or late affects their fertility or if it will have any effect on the gender of their baby. They want to know if there is anything they need to do differently to make sure they get pregnant with the gender they want. I will discuss these concerns in the next article.
Healthy ovulation and fertility plus intercourse with a healthy partner should equal pregnancy (no matter when it happens 🙂 The basic formula for getting pregnant is to conceive on or around your fertile period or ovulation. As long as this is achieved (assuming there is no medical problem or problem with you or your partner), you should eventually become pregnant.
Some women worry that early or late ovulation means there is a problem with their fertility. In my experience, this is usually not true. I personally ovulate quite late in my cycle (sometimes up to day 21 or even later) and I am most certainly a mother with a successful conception and pregnancy. A woman’s ovulation day can vary from month to month for a variety of reasons, many of which are beyond your control. There is no “right” or “better” day for this to happen. And, the actual calendar day on which this happens usually has no indication of how successful you will be with conception.
As long as you are successfully able to fertilize a healthy egg with healthy sperm in the correct time frame – no matter when it happens to your body – then you should eventually have success. Worry more about timing it right for your unique body. Everyone really is different and just because your experience is different doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
Does late or early ovulation affect the gender of your baby?: Many people who ask this question actually have the variables confused. They may have heard that conception that occurs before ovulation favors girls, while intercourse after ovulation favors boys. For the most part, this is true (although there are other variables to consider such as acidity and sexual positions used).
But, too early or too late the date you ovulate doesn’t really affect this equation. The two variables you need to be concerned about are when you have intercourse versus when your egg was released (meaning when you tested positive.) This is a variable that needs to be addressed. It doesn’t matter when the positive reading happened or what the calendar said when it happened. It is much more important when you had intercourse than when your attempts happened.
I hope this article has shown you that as long as you and your partner are known to be healthy, you don’t necessarily need to worry if you get a positive reading earlier or later than you thought you might. The actual date is not nearly as important as getting that positive reading. And there are countless mothers who have very successfully conceived during a later or earlier ovulation cycle. The plan should be the same. Focus on intercourse at the right time, with the right acid and using the right positions. The rest should fall into place.
