The Truth About Youth Hostels
In August 1909, German teacher Richard Schirrmann was caught in a severe thunderstorm during an eight-day migration with his students and found lodging in a farmer’s barn.
While the pupils slept, Schirrmann lay awake all night.
He was suddenly overcome by a thought: “We would have to create places, where mobile, joyful young people and students will get a safe and cheap overnight stay.”
He published this idea for the first time in 1910 in an essay on “Voksschuelerherbergen” (“elementary school student accommodation”),
“…also the boys and girls of the common man must practice fresh cheerful movement as a counterbalance to the room chair time of their school years…how can one now imagine suitable and sufficient accommodation for a vast army of primary school pupils ?…every town and almost every village has an elementary school, which is almost waiting for the holidays with empty spaces for it, into a dormitory and a dining room for the children who are rejoicing in the movement to transform. Two classrooms are enough, one for boys, one for girls. free space for a list of 15 berths…each campsite consists of a taut straw-stoppered sack and pillow, 2 sheets and a blanket.. .each child is stopped to return their campsite neatly and neatly…”
After the publication of this essay in the “Koelnische Zeitung” (Cologne newspaper), numerous monetary and in-kind contributions and offers of support arrived from all over Germany.
In 1912, the first youth home was opened in Altenia Castle in Germany
The first youth hostel was arranged according to Schirrmann’s plan: 2 bedrooms with solid wood beds on 3 floors, living room, kitchen, washroom and shower cabin. The first manager of the hostel was Richard Schirrmann. He lived directly above the hostel rooms. In the same year, Schirrmann published the first list of hostels with approximately 140 addresses.
In many of these accommodations, however, they were not even basic accommodations, e.g. there was nothing for the girls.
In 1913, there were already 301 youth homes in towns and villages. A year later one counted already 535.
In 1920, the first issue of the magazine “Youth Home” appeared, and the first handbook with addresses of youth homes was published with about 700 addresses.
From 1924-1929. 1.5 million imperial marks were won in the first lottery in favor of youth homes. In 1932, there were already 2,123 youth hostels in Germany. More than 4.5 million overnight stays were achieved. But at the end of the twenties, more than 600 youth hostels were already opened in other countries, such as Poland, the Netherlands, France, England and Switzerland.
On October 20, 1932, the International Federation of Youth Hostels (IYHF) was founded in Amsterdam in the presence of national agencies from Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, France and Belgium.
Today the alliance is based in Welwyn Garden City near London. Richard Schirrmann was elected president. The language of the conference was German.
At the next conference in 1933, Isabel and Monroe Smith from the USA also participated. Within a year, they were able to open thirty youth hostels in the United States. Also in 1933, the National Socialists came to power in Germany.
All political and religious combinations of young people were dissolved and replaced by a system of youth organizations that were necessarily formed at universities, under the line of “youth leadership sphere”. Richard Schirrmann has to step down as president of the German youth hostel factory.
He allowed himself to be impressed by the idealistic elements of the new movement and became honorary president of the Royal Federation of German Youth Hostels. A decision he would later regret bitterly.
In 1936, for political reasons, there was a break with the International Federation of Youth Hostels. In 1947, after the end of the World War, 247 youth homes with 1,158,500 overnight stays were counted again in Germany.
From 1949 to 1990, a wide network of youth hostels was developed in the GDR as well. At first they were still run as federations, later they became state-led youth institutions. The existing federations were dissolved. In 1960, there were the most youth hostels in the Federal Republic. More than 720 houses achieved 11,300,312 overnight stays.
In 1990, after the collapse of the GDR, federations of youth hostels were created in the new countries of the Federal Republic. In November, these federations joined the German Youth Hostel Association.
Youth homes today
Worldwide, there are more than 4,000 youth hostels in 65 countries, of which more than 600 are in Germany alone.
Youth homes in Germany offer their guests much more than a cheap overnight stay. In addition to small, cozy old buildings or experiences in castles and residences, you can also find many houses in beautiful picturesque surroundings, as well as in large cities.
