The History of Formula Milk

Despite recent detractors, there is no doubt that infant formula has saved countless lives over the years. The first successful milk formula was produced by Henri Nestle in the 1860s in Switzerland. It is based on cow’s milk and cereals and was the first scientific attempt to imitate mother’s milk.

It is not only in modern times that some mothers have difficulty producing enough breast milk to feed their babies: it has always been a problem and remains so. This inability to produce breast milk is more common in mothers who themselves have poor nutrition and is a major problem for mothers living in extreme poverty. While visiting mothers living in poverty and children in orphanages, Henri Nestle first decided to come up with a substitute for mother’s milk. He eventually came up with a concoction he called farine lactee, based, he said, on “healthy Swiss milk and a grain component baked by a special process of my invention.” In 1867 he fed this premature boy whose mother was herself dangerously ill; the boy survived, and Nestle’s reputation skyrocketed. Nestle’s main strength was not invention, he was an extremely good marketer, and within 5 years he was selling had an office in London and was exporting the formula to South America and Australia.

Nestle was not the only producer of milk formula. Others included Justus von Liebig, Horlicks and Mellins Foods. The success of the sow’s milk formula owes everything to the huge strides in bacteriology made by the likes of Louis Pasteur and others who made milk handling far safer than it had been before.

The term ‘formula’ is derived from Thomas Morgan Botch’s “percentage feeding” approach. He coined the term when he was trying to come up with the best mix of different ingredients that make up baby formula. A common basic formula, at that time, at Infant’s Hospital in Boston was 2-6-2, which meant 2% fat, 6% carbohydrates, and 2% protein. During the twentieth century, many commercial companies sought to improve milk formula. Franklin Infant Food introduced in 1923 was a powdered formulation, later named Similac. Enfamil, Mead Johnson, was late in 1959, but the company, founded in 1905, pioneered vitamin research in the 1920s with the first standardized strength cod liver oil in 1924 and pure vitamin D solution in 1929.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding formula milk in recent years. Sleek advertising campaigns led to millions of women feeding their babies formula instead of breast milk. While the negative effects in the West have been minimal (if any), the same cannot be said for mothers in the Third World who bottle-feed their babies. The lack of basic safe, clean water has led to the deaths of millions of children who were fed contaminated formula. Despite numerous campaigns, the practice of throwing away infant formula in the developing world seems to be an ongoing problem.

The history of formula milk in a bottle is not very old and millions of women around the world have accepted it amazingly. It’s also a controversial history and it looks like its future will be controversial.
