What Happens When You Are A Roly Poly Child?
Are you overweight? Are your children overweight? Are you feeling lost and confused and need help? You are not alone. This problem is here and it won’t go away. Read on.
I just look in the mirror and the truth hits me in the eyes.
Recently I have been listening to women talking about obesity in our children. She made me think back to my childhood and how I raised my two children.
Food choices and nutritional value today are very different from when I was in charge of my children’s food consumption.
Food today is full of chemicals and when we eat this food where is the nutritional value?
Vitamin supplements are walking out the doors of stores that sell them. It is now a multi-billion dollar business. I know for myself that I would try to heal any ailment I have naturally other than taking a prescription or over the counter medicine.
What does this have to do with our children and their food choices?
If you’ve ever watched your kids eat and seen what they choose to put in their mouths, which goes down their throats and then settles in their stomachs, you’d want to puke.
Soda is our children’s best friend, it tastes great, and it has many flavors:
How do we stop this avalanche of soda drinkers that starts in childhood and continues into adulthood? We can start shopping by removing it from our homes. This would be one less place for a child to receive this sugar and caffeine. We can’t control what they spend their money on when they’re with their friends, but we have to start somewhere.
For the past few years, I’ve stopped drinking soda and caffeinated coffee. Now I drink bottled water. I don’t miss sugar or caffeine and I feel so much better. But I’m an adult; children should be helped to make the right decisions.
What’s wrong with drinking milk? It is food for our bones and teeth. It’s just a thought.
FRANCES, CHEESE AND CHIPS:
Who doesn’t want to eat french fries and chips instead of vegetables and salad. We need fat, salt and cheese because they only clog our arteries.
This is another big problem facing parents today. French fries, cheese and chips will not disappear until the income from these products is astronomical.
How can we change this or at least balance between fruits and vegetables? Everyone has their own opinion and the only person who can effect this change is you.
As an adult, it’s hard for me to control what I eat. I recently attended a wonderful dinner at a friend’s house. The menu was not what I usually eat because of the content of the ingredients.
But I was with friends, we were all sitting at the table, laughing and talking and enjoying each other’s company; consequently, I ate too many of the wrong foods.
Our children are put in this situation every day and have less control over what they eat and I am a mature adult.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
If there was a simple answer to this question, I’d be a millionaire. We need to step back and look at this problem from the child’s perspective and then make changes.
Schools are where children eat every day. Sometimes breakfast and definitely lunch every day. Food choices are available for the child to choose from unless they bring boxed lunches.
Maybe that’s what’s needed. Maybe all children should start bringing their own lunch to school and parents should send a message to the school cafeteria STOP POISONING OUR CHILDREN.
(1) These are our children. Our own flesh and blood. They are precious to us and we could not live without them.
(2) Why is it so difficult for you to understand that good nutrition makes for a healthier mind and body.
(3) We take valuable time from our employment for their medical care.
(4) We take care of them when they are sick.
(5) You are creating a huge medical and dental problem that is now snowballing.
Believe it or not, children’s health problems are now climbing the stairs to the upper floor faster than this problem can be solved.
(1) Heart problems
(2) Diabetes problems
(3) High cholesterol
This is just a few steps leading up and out of control. Let’s find a solution to this huge problem and step aside.
Fast food is great for busy families and as a treat on some occasions. Fast food restaurants have made a big start in catering to children and adults who don’t want to eat sandwiches and fries with every meal. Now you can replace the salad.
Well done fast food restaurants!
Now that you’ve taken the first step, maybe you can take another baby step. Have fresh fruit available for purchase if desired. You might be surprised that your customers will actually eat it up.
Perhaps you could look at your menu with a parent’s eye. What would I like my child to eat in terms of nutritional value? Perhaps you could get creative and develop a tasty, attractive dish that the kids will love.
There are many positive activities that your children can get involved in. Below are some:
JOINT ACTIVITIES OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN:
(1) A walk
(2) Flying the kite
(3) Playing catch
(5) Roller skating
(6) Swimming – A day at the pool or beach.
(7) Book reading followed by discussion.
(8) Try writing a short story or poem together.
(9) Write a cookbook together.
(11) Try cutting out food groups from magazines together and make a colorful picture that you can put on your fridge or other places in your home.
The ideas are endless because every child and parent has their own special interests and they don’t have to cost a fortune. In the long run, your children want to spend time with you.
When your kids are healthy and busy they are less likely to get into trouble. For children and teenagers, trouble lurks everywhere if they choose to look for it.
LABELS ON CANS AND BOTTLES:
Reading labels on cans and bottles in grocery stores is confusing. I read and read and read and finally I don’t know which item to buy? Do you feel the same way?
Perhaps the food industry should try to use plain English to label their food. What’s really in it? Don’t you want us consumers, who buy and consume your food, to know the truth about the ingredients in your products?
In a restaurant, every tempting dish seems to have too much fat, cheese and salt. All the ingredients that make your taste buds dance with delight, but what does it do to your body inside and out.
As a parent, you must lead by example in your daily diet and exercise. You might not think your kids notice, but they do.
GET THE KIDS TO COOK:
Let your children, depending on their age, help you in the kitchen. Let them choose the menu themselves and let them prepare it. Most children who have a hand in food preparation will eat it.
This topic is so big and huge that it makes my head spin just thinking about it.
As a mother and grandmother I’m not a professional anyway, but these are my thoughts. If your child is not getting a well-balanced diet every day, make sure he gets a good vitamin and mineral supplement.
I believe that many of the problems that children face today with attention deficit problems, behavioral problems and health problems stem from an unbalanced diet.
That is my opinion. What’s yours?
