Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer – My Experience
I bought the Athena pelvic muscle trainer because I had a weakened pelvic floor caused by the natural birth of three children (one was a particularly difficult and long delivery). My symptoms included mild incontinence and relaxed vaginal muscles.
I was all quite uncomfortable. Like most of us, I really tried to do Kegel exercises, but they just seemed so tiring and I always needed something else to think about. Also, I never knew if I was doing them right. There were so many “dos and don’ts” and lots of information that if you did it wrong, it wouldn’t be good.
After the birth of my first child 20 years ago, I didn’t look much different “down there”. I had an episiotomy and the birth was long and traumatic. After the birth of my second child, I noticed that my urine started to leak a little. This would happen during exercise, which is why I started wearing skimpy panties, and I also noticed that if my bladder was really full, I couldn’t make it to the bathroom without leaking a little.
I mentioned this to the nurse when I went in for my swab and was given a sheet detailing Kegel exercises. I could never get the feeling of tightening properly, even though I really tried to incorporate them into my daily routine. For example, I tried to make it a point to do them in the car on the way to work, and at night, when I went to bed, I would try to do a few. It wasn’t until after the birth of my third child, when things got really bad, that I considered repair surgery.
It got to the point where I was constantly wearing a sanitary pad to absorb the leakage. I couldn’t do any exercise without soaking and I noticed that when I wear tampons, they seem to fall out of place and are often near the entrance to my vagina even though they were inserted properly. I later found out that I had mild prolapse symptoms.
I was watching GMTV one morning and Dr Hilary Jones mentioned the Athena Pelvic Trainer. I thought it looked interesting, but I hadn’t heard the whole segment and didn’t think much more of it until I heard Chris Steele from This Morning recommend it, saying it was a safe way to do Kegels. He said over 42% of women under the age of 50 suffer from mild to moderate incontinence and most would not discuss it with their partners or even their GP. I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. This was my last chance to do anything before the repair surgery.
I used Athena twice a day for 15 minutes each time. Within a few weeks I noticed that things looked “tighter”. Within a month, there was a real difference in the amount of urine leakage and I would say that after about 12 weeks I was completely dry. It was like a little miracle for me! After years of suffering in silence and feeling like an old woman, I was suddenly “healed”. I found it completely safe.
The Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer is wireless and that convinced me to try it over other pelvic toners. It’s only the size of a tampon, so I found it very easy to use. I got into the habit of using it while eating breakfast and then in the evening while watching TV, so it never interfered with my routine. I still use it, as Dr. Chris Steele said “Use it or lose it” – meaning like any muscle it’s best to exercise it regularly. Now I only use it a few times a week.
