Savvy Scissor Tips – Part 1
How important is it to teach your child how to cut hair at such a young age? The use of scissors requires and enhances many developmental tasks. Some parents stated that their child was “too small for a haircut”. A child following the appropriate developmental path should start cutting hair at the age of 2 years.
There are several developmental skills that a child learns at an early age. Cutting allows the child to build the tiny muscles in the palm, as it has to continuously open and close the hand. These muscles are also used when the child writes/paints or holds anything. For example, a child should hold a toothbrush, spoon or fork and put on pants every day.
Cutting also improves the use of hand-eye coordination. This means that the child must be able to use their vision, process what they see, and then be able to move their hand while looking at something. This can be a difficult task because it requires the brain to work with two systems. However, hand-eye coordination is used throughout your child’s day. It is used when your child catches or throws a ball, uses a spoon to get the food they want and fastens their coat.
Cutting also encourages your child to use bilateral coordination. This means that your child can use both sides of the body at the same time. For example, when cutting a circle, the child must hold the paper with one hand (and continuously rotate it), while opening and closing the scissors with the other hand and moving forward to cut. You may have to try this to understand the true meaning. Bilateral coordination (using both hands while each doing something different) is used in everyday life. For example, it can be used when buttoning a coat or pants, washing dishes, opening an envelope, and driving.
Think about all the little things you do every day and how you constantly use the tiny muscles in your hand, hand coordination and bilateral coordination. Please see “Smart Scissors Tips, Part 2” to learn techniques on how to make this skill easier.
