When Weight Loss is Not Enough – Are You at Risk For an Eating Disorder?
With all the talk about dieting and weight loss, it’s easy to get caught up in how we look and how much we weigh. Unfortunately, the line between weight loss and excess fat loss and eating disorders can easily be crossed. If you think you or someone you know has a problem, read on.
Common signs of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and overeating
Almost everyone has been on a diet at some point in their life. It’s not uncommon to want to lose a few pounds here and there, even if you’re relatively thin. It’s normal to want to lose a few pounds after the holidays or for a special event. However, some people, both men and women, take it too far. It becomes a compulsion and an obsession. This is where the problems begin.
Take the following quiz to determine if your diet has gone too far.
1. [Women/Girls] My periods are irregular or have stopped.
[Men/Boys] My sex drive has gone down.
2. Other people are concerned about my eating habits.
3. I enjoy cooking for other people, but I don’t eat food.
4. I am not honest about when and what I eat.
5. If only I lost weight, then I would be happy.
6. I stole to support my weight loss goals. (ie laxatives, diet pills)
7. I overeat.
8. I have food hidden around the house.
9. My eating habits disturb my friends and family.
10. Don’t bother me while I’m eating.
The more you agree, the more likely you are to have an eating disorder. You can check out the Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorder (ANERD) website for more eating disorder symptoms.
Typical ages of onset
Although anyone can develop the disorder at any age, there are typical ages at which people start a particular disorder. This is just a guideline for typical ages.
· Anorexia nervosa – generally begins in early and middle adolescence
· Bulimia Nervosa – Usually begins in the late teens or early 20s
· Binge eating – Starts at any age. However, it is generally not recognized until adulthood.
Who is at risk?
While 95% of all eating disorders are women and girls, 5% to 10% are men. Therefore, eating disorders in men and boys should not be ignored. They too can become victims of this terrible and life-threatening problem.
