Old Wive’s Tales and Other Things That Just Might Help with ADHD

Here are some tips I’ve picked up from parents I’ve met in my 15 years of working with children with ADHD and their families. They have not been clinically tested. They have been investigated. These are not medications that I would say are reliable or valid approaches to treating ADHD, but I wanted to share them with you because they seem to help some kids, and I wouldn’t want to be the judge of whether or not they might help your child. So you might want to try this from time to time and see what happens. Some of your children are very sensitive to certain foods, whether it’s sugars, sugars combined with carbohydrates, certain food colorings, sodas, or even certain fruits. I have personally seen some children have almost psychotic reactions to red grapes, for example. And many parents of my patients report that their child has significant reactions to different foods or drinks. So here are some of the things that some of these parents have said work for them when their child “goes off” food:

1) Peanut butter. Yes, several parents have told me that when their child gets really tired after eating something they shouldn’t, a spoon full of peanut butter will settle their child in about 10 minutes. Why? I have no idea. Maybe fat or protein, but I really don’t know. 2) Alka-Seltzer, especially Alka-Seltzer Gold. In the same situation as above, other parents report giving their child Alka-Seltzer. In fact, with a kid who went “crazy” after eating red grapes (and did so several times before it was discovered that red grapes were the problem), Alka-Seltzer worked every time to stop the problem within 10 -15 minutes. I have several parents who carry Alka-Seltzer in their purses in case their kids need it when they go out together. NOTE: Alka-Seltzer contains aspirin. NEVER give your child aspirin if they have a fever, as it can cause bad things to happen. This would probably be fine for teenagers and certainly for adults. Consult your doctor. Why would this work? Well, I think it probably has something to do with blood sugar levels, blood pH levels, and the pancreas. I was told that sugars make pH levels more acidic, which sends a message to the pancreas to produce more insulin, which then rises rapidly and then drops. Through the roller coaster of insulin levels, the child can experience hyperactivity and then significant temperament problems. Now, this is way beyond my level of expertise, since I’m not an expert on blood sugar, etc. But I will say that with one simple intervention we had good success. When presented with a child who has ADHD and a terrible temper in the morning when they first wake up, I recommend two things. First, no sugar after 7 p.m., and second, as soon as he wakes up, drink a small cup of orange juice. So far this has helped the situation every time for every kid who has had this problem. I would never want you to believe that blood sugar problems cause ADD. That’s not. However, a small percentage of ADD children are very sensitive to problems such as food and environmental allergies, blood sugar problems, and the like. Just because ALL ADD kids don’t have these problems doesn’t mean NO ADD kids don’t have these problems. Some do, and the above suggestions, strange as they may be, may help some of you reading this newsletter. Let me know if they help you.
