Weight Loss and Children – Should My Child Go on a Diet?
Childhood obesity statistics do not look good. Twenty-five percent of all white children in America are overweight. Thirty-three percent of African American and Hispanic children are overweight. More doctors are seeing adult-onset diabetes in overweight children.
I grew up a skinny kid. My sister was chubby. To be honest, I ate more than her. I definitely tried to get my hands on junk when I could (candy was not in our budget). Fats only caught up with me in my late twenties. By then my horrible habits had ravaged my body.
What annoys me is when parents put their obese child on a diet while they eat a bag of chips in front of them. I see it in both husbands and wives. How does anyone expect a child to resist a bag of cookies in the pantry? Children will adapt a healthy lifestyle when a parent leads a healthy lifestyle. Also, giving your child treats just to stop him from crying is training your child to be an emotional eater.
I don’t believe in putting children on diets. I believe that the whole family should lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It really gets to me when I see adults giving kids junk food all the time. They think it’s okay just because their kids are skinny. Thin people have heart disease and diabetes. Parents are setting their children up for healthy lifestyle failure when most of the food they eat is processed, full of sugar and very low in nutrients.
