How Many Hours Do You Need To Sleep?

Newborns should sleep about 18 hours by the second month. Then the range decreases to 14 or 15 hours as they progress to their first year. Toddlers from 1 to 3 years old need about 12 to 14 hours of sleep. This decreases to 11 to 13 as they grow into five-year-olds. Children aged 5 to 12, on the other hand, can get about 10 to 11 hours, while teenagers aged 12 to 18 can get 8 ½ to 10 hours. Adults need fewer hours of sleep, ranging from 7 ½ to 9 hours.

You would notice that as your body matures and becomes adept at responding to environmental and physiological changes, the number of hours of sleep it needs decreases. On the other hand, young people need more hours of sleep in order for their bodies to change and adapt.

Given the power and effect sleep has on your body, it’s important to know how much sleep you’re getting each night. Likewise, the more important thing lies not only in how many hours you sleep, but also in the quality of your rest. Deep sleep within the right number of hours is definitely preferable to disturbed sleep for an even longer period of time. To fully understand the importance of sleep, ask your doctor about it.
