Juan Diaz – "The Baby Bull"

The 24-year-old Diaz recently lost his WBA, WBO and IBF title belts to Nate Campbell on March 8, 2008. The loss was his first career fight. Diaz suffered a severe cut over his left eye caused by a headbutt, the cut affecting Diaz’s vision throughout the match. Diaz reports that his left eye is now fully healed after minor surgery to bring up the infection, as Diaz describes to us the cut and his “stubbornness” in not stating his angle led to the loss of the fight. Diaz says he got away from his usual fight plan which involves jabbing and a series of combinations instead, Diaz stayed inside and Campbell was able to land some solid punches. Two of the three judges scored the match for Campbell, giving him a split decision victory.

Diaz informs us that his next bout is scheduled for September 6, 2008 against Michael Katsidis. The fight will take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, which is Diaz’s hometown, the only detail left is for both fighters to officially sign the contract. This will be Diaz’s return to Houston after not fighting there for 3 years and he sees it as a big home field advantage. Diaz is very proud to be a champion, he understands the dedication required to regain his belts. Not only is Diaz committed to returning to the championship, but he is also a full-time student who will graduate from the University of Houston within the next year, where he earned his master’s degree in pre-law. According to Diaz, his daily routine involves getting up early and heading to the 24/7 Wellness Center, where he starts his day with weight training, then swimming, and then off to University. Diaz is so committed to graduating that he even enrolled in summer classes. At night, Diaz will hit the gym again to finish off his daily stair workout. This daily workout routine that differs from the boxer’s usual workout plan was created by his strength and conditioning coach Brian Caldwell. With all this going on, Diaz finds time to study to keep up his good grades, after graduation Diaz who is Mexican, American plans to enter Law School. He would eventually like to pursue either immigration law or sports contracts. Diaz, like former Mexican boxing champion and Hall of Famer Carlos Palomino, will be one of the few champion boxers with a college degree. In fact, Palomino fought Armando Muniz on January 21, 1977, the first time two boxers with college degrees had fought for a world title.

Diaz, who began learning to box at age 8, had a distinguished amateur career compiling a record of 105-5, but was barred from competing for Mexico’s Olympic team in 2000 because he was underage. Not wanting to wait another four years, Diaz turned pro and went on to win his first professional bout on June 23, 2000 at the age of 16 by defeating Rafael Ortiz by first round knockout. Since his first bout, Diaz has won 32 bouts and has a record of 33-1. Now Diaz is looking to win against the tough Michael Katsidis who hails from Toowoomba, Australia. Katsidis (23 -1) (20KO’s) is also coming off his first loss in which he was knocked out by Joel Casamayor in the 10th round. Diaz says he’s started studying film on Katsidis and will work with his longtime training staff or Ronnie Fields and Derwin Richards to develop a superior game plan. Diaz who was devastated to lose his title belts realizes that he is looking forward to the most and that he should continue his career. A win over Katsidis will put him back in the hunt for a lightweight title that, in addition to Campbell and Casamayor, also includes up-and-coming talents Anthony Peterson and Amir Khan.

After the Nate Campbell fight, Diaz switched promoters from Don King to Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya. Juan says the change was for the better, and now he is with promoters who care about their fighters and get them into the right match. Golden Boy introduced Diaz for the Joe Calzaghe-Bernard Hopkins fight on April 19 in Las Vegas. Diaz has been part of the weigh-in event and has shared the stage with many great fighters and celebrities. As legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer announced, every celebrity on stage, Diaz must have reminded Buffer to announce him as Juan Diaz “The Baby Bull.” Diaz is truly a “Baby Bull” with an undeniable work ethic and a never-give-up attitude. “The Baby Bull” is on the right path in life.
