Did Helen Keller Demonstrate Paranormal Abilities Similar to Some Individuals With Severe Autism?

“The best and most beautiful things cannot be seen or heard – they must be felt with the heart.” –Helen Keller

I have worked with many children and adults diagnosed with severe non-verbal autism. I was taught that merging consciousness makes language impairments based on linear thinking obsolete. Subconscious knowledge appears, as a common flow of ideas comes to the fore. Unconditional love, trust and the expectation of competence open this channel. A sense of balance is established. We are in communion. By connecting souls, our individual perceptual realities become entangled. I guess Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller had a similar relationship.

Helen had typical sensory experiences until she was 18 months old. At that moment she was struck by a fever. Age of onset is similar to reports from parents who say their autistic child developed normally and regressed abruptly. Due to her illness, hearing and vision loss, Helen’s typical sensory processes were disrupted.

Helen was lost until Annie Sullivan came along. I see a correlation between Helen’s journey and her relationship with Annie Sullivan with some of the children I have worked with. This kind of catalytic relationship is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

Many of the students I have worked with have shown atypical senses such as telepathy. Helen and Annie’s relationship has been noted as having extrasensory elements, according to Dennett’s (1998) article entitled: “Helen Keller: Did the Deaf-Blind Genius Have Ways of Sensing Beyond the Normal?” My guess is that Annie and Helen merged consciousness. Perhaps the synchronization of brain waves and sensory systems was the initial “key” to unlocking Helen’s understanding. I guess I’m conflating consciousness with severely autistic children. I guess Helen and Annie also merged consciousness. Perhaps this fusion helped Helen experience information through Anne’s sensory system? Lawrence Hutton stated: “Miss Sullivan told us that without conscious movement, without intentional or perceptible ‘finger talking’ she could make a child follow his thoughts, do what he wanted to do, go where he wanted to go, perform any which of the ‘mind reading’ acts that professional psychologists exhibit on stage or in an amateur way.”

I have had many children choose a word or picture that I sent them using a form of telepathy. I have also had students type letter by letter and word by word based solely on my conscious thought. I have also had students with limited verbal abilities speak the words I sent them telepathically.

According to Dennett, Sullivan stated, “Helen Keller’s development suggests to me that the loss of one or more faculties can, through discipline, bring a handicapped person to a deeper level of willpower than is required of normally equipped human beings. There is no doubt that most people live in very limited sphere of their potential capacities. They use only a small part of their possible powers and resources of their minds. As if, of their physical furniture, they should use only a fraction of each sense.”

I agree with Annie. Typical people, no matter how extreme their cultural differences, share a common perceptual reality based on information received through their senses. It is natural to develop a different perceptual reality when one has atypical sensory experiences. This would certainly have a changing effect on perceptual reality and the ability to interact with the world.

The article mentions Mark Twain’s fascinating encounter with Helen and Annie: “Annie asked, ‘What is Mr. Clemens famous for?’ Helen replied, in her crippled speech, ‘For his humor.’ Mark Twain spoke modestly and said, ‘And for his wisdom.’ Helen immediately spoke the same words, and because of his wisdom.'” Twain says, “I guess it was mental telegraphy because there was no way for her to know what I said.” I have experienced instant knowledge with my students. Passing thoughts of prediction often resulted in immediate responses.

The article quotes Helen as saying: “I have always been firmly convinced that there are powers in many animals which can be developed beyond the physical senses, and it is a pleasure to note that orthodox scientists are beginning to look for causes other than mechanical. to explain telepathy… Surely if creatures without the faculty of reasoning can perform such miracles, man endowed with spiritual and intellectual powers can achieve phenomena which cannot be explained by mechanism, but by laws yet to be discovered.”

People with severe autism have shown me that they have developed their senses beyond the ordinary. They are more in touch with subconscious knowledge and the spiritual side of life. Their souls are not fully integrated with their bodies. This lack of integration leaves the soul in a unique position, unlike those who have fully integrated, resulting in a greater connection to the subconscious or spiritual self. This lack of grounding leaves the body unsure of how to orient itself in the physical world. As if in a dream state, the individual has difficulty controlling or categorizing thoughts. The knowledge itself, however, is vast and covers an innate understanding of universal truths lost by the more integrated individual.

Artist and sculptor Gutzon Borglum, mentioned in the article, wrote of his meeting with Helen Keller: “I will never forget that hour with Helen Keller. . . . I learned from it that the soul, above and beyond the body, has eyes.” I came to the same realization while working with some severely autistic children and adults. Some even seemed to direct their bodies outside of themselves.

According to the article, Helen appeared to have had a profound out-of-body experience. Helen said: “I sat quietly in the library for half an hour. I turned to the teacher and said: ‘Such a strange thing has happened! I was away all this time and never left the room. ‘ “What do you mean, Helen?” she asked in surprise. ‘Why,’ I cried, ‘I was in Athens.’ Scarcely had the words left my mouth when a great and astonishing realization seemed to seize my mind and set it on fire. I perceived the reality of my soul and its pure independence from all conditions of place and body. It was clear to me that it was because I was a ghost who so vividly ‘saw’ and felt a place thousands of miles away. The space was nothing for the spirit! In that new consciousness shone the presence of God, He Himself the Spirit everywhere at once, the Creator who dwells in all the universe at the same time.”

My answer to that final quote based on my experiences is AMEN! My students, who are actually my teachers, patiently guide me towards this awareness.

Helen seems to have ended up completely independent of Annie, functioning in this world without giving up her gifts of telepathy, mind sharing, remote viewing, or spirit connection. I hope that one day people with non-verbal low-functioning autism will do the same.
