What to Have for Lunch? Try Peaches and Banana

If you’re looking for something for lunch, try peaches and a banana. Not only will it fill you up, but you’ll be getting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and yet you won’t gain much weight. Not bad if you are like me, not so young and watch everything you eat.

Why not? After all, the body is no longer what it once was, the food-grinder of a sixteen-year-old—or a twenty-six-year-old, for that matter.

Cheeseburgers or Egusi/melon soup with pounded yams are delicious foods, but you don’t always have to eat them – unless, of course, you’re lucky enough to do manual labor.

But I’m not so lucky, because I mostly do sedentary work. It’s not that I don’t love my job, but I wish it came with some real physical activity – just enough to make me sweat and keep the weight off forever, but not so much that it tires my ankles, knees and bones. I’ll need it when I’m ninety, like my ageless friend. Well, that’s by the way.

For starters, peaches and bananas complement each other like water and cement. In combination, it will satisfy hunger and satisfy appetite.

If you are wondering where to get fresh peaches and bananas, stores like Big Y, Stop and Shop are my favorites. Find a grocery store nearby where you can easily stock up on fresh peaches and bananas.

Until I started writing this article, I did not know that peaches can refresh the body, face, appearance of the skin, and even slow down the aging process. You don’t need any more reasons to include peaches in your menu, do you?

One particular afternoon I was looking for something to eat for lunch instead of almonds. I usually skip lunch because I think lunch is irrelevant, especially if you’re like me, with a sedentary lifestyle. I sit all day, occasionally get up to stretch out my hand, but quickly sit down in a chair.

The point is that I don’t do much and therefore I don’t deserve much food. Some days, however, when I felt hungry (not without guilt), I would drive to a nearby grocery store and buy a bag or two of almonds. I immediately went back to the car, I would tear open the small plastic bag and the walnuts with my finger, three or five at a time, until I was done. After that I would face the second pack and give it a blow just like the first one. Each bag had 130 calories, so all together this little snack gave me 260 calories.

For the most part my hunger would disappear, allowing me to continue all day with my sedentary lifestyle sitting in a chair, occasionally getting up if I needed to emphasize a point when talking to parents and their children, doing whatever I could to alleviate, if only temporarily, their physical and sometimes mental troubles.

Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes I’ll go from one room to another, across a short hallway to the refrigerator to pick out a vaccine, or reach out to rummage through the wall cabinets for a needle, syringe, or gloves.

No one in his right mind would call any of these activities other than sedentary, for which a heavy pile of food, such as pounded yam or garri, or rice or goat meat or soup or fries or hamburger or sandwiches, would be unnecessary. That’s why I tried to keep lunch very simple and limited to almonds.

And so, that afternoon when I was looking for something to eat instead of almonds, I thought of banana and peaches. Well, it’s not like I’ve never eaten bananas or peaches, but I didn’t know they could be such a good substitute for my two packs of almonds at about 260 calories. Somewhere in my brain, banana and peaches have been hiding in plain sight ever since I saw my son Jermane bite into a slice of banana and my daughter Amy bite into a piece of peach.

“Are those all the peaches you bought?” I asked Amy when I saw her eating a large peach. “Yes, Dad, I’m sorry,” she said.

The next day at lunchtime, instead of buying two packs of almonds at the corner store, I went to the ‘Stop and Shop’ grocery store and picked out two ripe but firm peaches and a bunch of four ripe, firm bananas.

Back in the car, I looked under the seat and found a half-full bottle of water that I used to wash the peaches. I placed one peach on a clean napkin on the passenger seat and held the other, inspecting it for dents and soft spots, which I don’t like in fruit.

Satisfied, I gritted my teeth and took a piece of juicy peach. What a delicious, refreshing, slightly spicy taste! The velvety feel of the skin made me want to keep the fruit a little longer, but hunger got the better of me.

Peaches are nutritious, with plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I don’t think they get the respect they deserve among the fruit growing family.

Banana is a very popular and ubiquitous fruit, so there is no need to discuss it in detail, let me just say that I choose my banana because I want it just right, not overripe or unripe, just ripe, and strong and easy to peel from the top, it is not gooey. Like peaches, bananas contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

As usual, the banana did not disappoint and I ate two of the four. Shortly after my hunger subsided, I began to suffer from post-gluttony despair.

Maybe I overdid the food, the sweet food I still remember my grandmother warning me about when I was a boy. I ran away to stay with her in my village in Akokva, because I wanted to escape from the supervision of my parents. My mother especially often came to my room to check on me and ask, “Are you okay, my son?” even though all she wanted to know was who I was hanging out with. Grandma never bothered with it; she would bring me, her eighteen-year-old grandson, a bitter leaf soup with dried fish: a bitter leaf broth, cooked with dried fish.

Oh, I miss Grandma. Forgive me for digressing, but I thought you should understand the kind of person I am – at least a little bit of who I was as a child.

Driven by the person I had become, I added up the calories and cost of two peaches and two bananas. A peach, the size I ate, had about 70 calories, two of which had 140 calories. Let’s say a giant banana contains 150 calories, two would contain 300 calories. Together, two large peaches and two huge bananas add up to about 440 calories; it’s not that expensive either – all for just $2.00.

Peaches and bananas fill the stomach better than two small packages of almonds. The next time you’re wondering what to eat for lunch, try two peaches and two bananas. I promise you will enjoy them. If you’re watching your weight, don’t feel guilty; you will have a healthy meal and only about 500 calories.
