Reverse osmosis is a water purification technology that achieves a high percentage of pollutants, dissolved and undissolved (up to 99% retention of dissolved salts). When two liquids with different salt concentrations are separated by a semipermeable membrane, the pressure difference between the two sides of the membrane is a function of the concentration difference. This pressure, called osmotic, forces the pure water to drop the lower concentration to the side of the higher concentration until the concentrations become equal.
Conversely, if the system applies a higher osmotic pressure and vice versa, it is pure water from the higher concentration side that moves to the lower concentration side. This phenomenon, which has a key role in the metabolism of all living cells, can also be used as a method of desalination or demineralization, apart from very simple means.
