The Beast – Lord of the Flies

Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island constantly face various fears. However, there is nothing on the island they fear more than beasts. In Lord of the Flies, the theme of the beast is extremely important. The beast represents the way man will try to convince himself that there is no evil in him by making someone or something else appear to be the cause of evil. The story of the dangerous presence appeared already on the first day on the island, when a little boy with a mulberry-colored birthmark on his face informed everyone about the “beast”, which he had apparently seen the night before. It is significant that Jack felt it necessary to kill the pigs, since there was already enough food on the island. It is possible that Jack simply wanted to kill the pigs because the evil within him began to emerge and fueled his desire to kill. At this moment, another significant event took place – open violence among the boys. When Jack was confronted by Piggy and Ralph for allowing the fire to go out and the ship to pass, he lashed out at Piggy, whom he clearly despised, and broke his glasses. This somewhat further illustrates how the evil within Jack has begun to take control of him.
