Thirukural – Tamil’s Classical Literature
Acknowledged as a masterpiece of Tamil literature, this book consisting of 133 sections of 10 couplets has stood the test of history and is accepted by posterity as a seminal work that has influenced human thought throughout the ages. It is a work not only of great aesthetic and stylistic literary value, but also a guide to the art of living with nuggets of priceless wisdom.
The scope of these verses covers topics such as ethics, statehood, citizenship, love, the art of living in its myriad forms. It deals with the three ARAM, PORUL, INBUM which are necessary for the life of the action.
Thirukural is divided into three parts. The first part deals with Aram doing things, with conscience and principle, for the benefit of the less privileged, the second deals with the Porul realities or essentials of life, and the third dwells on Inbam with the pleasures that man and woman encounter. during their relationship. There you can find 38 chapters in the first part, 70 chapters in the second part and 25 chapters in the third part.
The profound thoughts and ideas of this great saint-poet are contained in the shortest possible Tamil meter called “Kural”. Thus the wisdom of Thiru Valluvar (the author) is expressed in unparalleled verses that combine beauty with brevity. The translation of these verses into other languages will also enrich the literature of this language.
Two thousand years later, we see the same concern for ethical values and the same commitment to express these lofty thoughts in a language and idiom that the common man can understand in Thirukural.
