Making the Transition From Crib to Bed Safe and Smooth

As a mother, I am well aware of all the stressful milestones that occur in toddler and preschool age. One of these stressful times is changing from a crib to a big boy or girl bed. There are some tips and tricks you can use to make this transition smooth and safe for both you and your child.

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine when your child is ready to leave the crib. With this decision it is important to follow your child’s lead. A sure sign is whether your child can actually get out of the crib. This may pose a risk of injury to your child. At an early age, children often lack the coordination and stability to climb safely, not to mention the risk of falling several feet to the floor.

According to experts, children usually transition from a crib to a bed between the ages of 18 and 36 months. If they are not out of the crib yet, there is no need to rush. dr. Laura Jana, a pediatrician in general medicine in Denver, Colorado, and one of the experts Dr. Spocka says “there is no definitive answer to the question of when a child should be transitioned from a crib to a bed. Every family’s situation is different, and in many ways this question really comes down to a matter of opinion.” One thing to consider is that the longer a child stays in a crib, the more attached they may become and the transition to bed may be more difficult.

There are a number of things you can try to make it easier for everyone involved. Once you’ve determined it’s time to leave the crib, set a time frame for the transition period. The reason for this is that it is often easier for a child to see a bed set up in their room for a few days while continuing to sleep in their crib. This allows them to psychologically adapt to it.

The type of bed you will transfer them to is strictly a personal preference. Many people decide to initially put the mattress on the floor to avoid accidental falls from beds that are too high. Today, there are thousands of different bed styles, from toddler beds to twin beds and larger ones. You can find themed beds, car-shaped beds, four-poster beds, etc… The list is endless. Keep in mind that the nicer the bed, the more expensive it will likely be, considering how many years will be in this bed.

Let them help create their own space. Take them shopping for bedding and accessories. Have them choose one special item to sleep with each night, such as a new teddy bear or other soft object to cuddle. Toddler-sized pillows are usually a better and safer choice than standard-sized pillows because they are more proportionate to a smaller child’s body. These ideas will comfort them as they try to adjust to their new sleep schedule.

Again, safety is always a priority. Make sure you have means to prevent your child from falling out of bed, such as a bed rail. If your child’s bed is against a wall, another great safety item is a bed bumper for big kids. This will help prevent nighttime bumps and noises as your child rolls over in their sleep, creating a barrier between your child and their wall.

Gradually start letting them nap in the new bed during the day if they are still napping. This is also a great way to really stay awake while they “react” to their new sleeping quarters. After a few successful naps, start getting excited with them about how big they are now. Have them help you disassemble the crib and take it out of the bedroom. Make the whole experience exciting and happy.

To prevent them from wandering around the house, a gate can be used to separate them from the rest of the house, either by placing them on their door or placing them in the hallway so they can only access your room or theirs. Be sure that all childproofing precautions are taken in your home.

It is very important to be patient and give it time. If you are relaxed and loving throughout the process, your child will do well and you will all sleep well.

To sum it all up:

o The bedroom and the home should be completely protected from children.

o Make their sleeping space fun and interesting by letting them choose some decor.

o Make sure there are comforting things in the room; night lights, stuffed animals.

o A reasonable transition period with a new bed in the room while the child is still in the crib.

o Start by getting them to sleep in the new bed at bedtime.

o Be sure to separate them from the rest of the house by using a gate.

o Give it time.
