Why Do Dogs Try and Mate With Your Leg?
Many people have experienced the awkward moment when their host’s male suddenly wraps his front feet around their leg and starts thrusting hard into their pelvis.
Why do these dogs engage in such an unpromising activity?
The answer is that dogs go through a special phase of socialization when they are puppies, during which time they establish their identity. This critical period lasts from four to twelve weeks, and any species that shares this time with them in close and friendly proximity becomes their species. For all pet dogs, two types are always present in this crucial stage of growing up – dogs and people. As a result, they become ‘mental hybrids’, strongly attached to both species. For the rest of their lives, they remain relaxed in both canine and human society. Their human family members serve well enough as an adopted ‘pack’. Humans share their food, share their den, patrol the territory together, play together, indulge in a little social grooming, perform the necessary greeting ceremonies, and generally act canine companions with ease.
Canine society and human society get along well. Only when it comes to sex does the relationship end.
Fortunately, there are some powerful innate responses involved in canine sexual attraction that usually serve to point dogs in the right direction. Since humans do not possess the special erotic scent of a dog, they usually do not elicit sexual reactions from the male dogs who share their homes. As far as dogs are concerned, humans are simply ‘members of their pack who are never in a sexual state’.
All should be well, but unfortunately for most male dogs, encounters with bitches in heat are abnormally rare events in their domesticated lives. The level of sexual frustration increases when even the family cat starts to look attractive. At this point a randy dog will try to mount almost anything that will stay still long enough, including cats, other male dogs, pillows, and people’s legs.
Human legs are attractive because they are easy to fasten. Choosing the leg over some more appropriate part of the human anatomy is simply because of the clumsy shape of human beings. They are too big and too high, making the leg the only easily accessible area for ultimate sexual progress.
The correct response to a leg-grabbing dog is compassion, not anger. After all, we have condemned such dogs to an abnormally celibate existence. A polite rebuff to their advances is all that is needed, rather than the angry punishment that is sometimes meted out.
The comment about the dog’s interest in the family cat was not intended to be humorous. Some sexually frustrated dogs try to mate with cats, but this only happens when the animals grew up together as puppies and kittens. Close association with young cats during the critical stage of puppy development simply adds cats to the category of ‘my kind’ in the dog’s mind.
A puppy that played with:
(a) other puppies in the litter,
(b) family kitten, i
(c) her human owners, during the socialization phase of four to twelve weeks, will have a triple bond that will last a lifetime.
There is another side to this bonding process. The absence of the species during the socialization period of the puppy’s development means that it is automatically something to avoid later on. This applies even to the right type of puppy. If a young puppy is taken from its mother before its eyes and ears are open – say, when it is only a week old – and hand-raised in isolation, it will bond massively with people, but will always be shy around other dogs. in later life. Therefore, it is a big mistake to prematurely remove a puppy from its family. If there is a disaster, where the mother dies and only one puppy survives, for example, then it is important to try to have other puppies or dogs around the young one while it is being bred so that it gets used to the company of its own kind during its critical period of growth.
If a puppy is left with its canine family but completely away from people until it is twelve weeks old, it will never become tame and friendly with people later in life. The puppies raised in the field on the experimental farm, where they had no close contact with humans until the litter was fourteen weeks old, were actually like wild animals.
The idea that the domestic dog is somehow a ‘genetically tame’ animal is therefore incorrect. The suggestion that wolves are “wilder” and more untamable than dogs is also incorrect. A wolf cub taken at a young enough stage of development becomes an extremely friendly companion, so much so that most people, when they saw it being taken for a walk with a collar and lead, would think it was just another big dog. Indeed, on one occasion a tame adult wolf was taken from England to the United States on Queen Elizabeth, registered as an Alsatian, without any comment. He was walked around the deck daily and happily petted by passengers and crew, who would have been horrified to know his true identity.
