Piracy on the Sea of Cortez

An early morning dream voice told me that Chamula had returned. As hard as I tried not to, I fell in love with the captain of the shrimp trawler cooperative, Joven, from Guaymas, Mexico. We met six months earlier in a small palapa restaurant at the mouth of the Mulega River. For months I had incredible experiences. In the morning from my dream, my sister and I talked over coffee and I told her how much I wanted to go out with him on this latest expedition. However, Chamula could not promise when he would return and thought it best not to go. Just then, Alisabeth’s boyfriend, Marcos, walked through the door, his fierce Yaki Indian face looking even more so today. He hardly reported that Joven had been robbed; a crew held in the crosshairs by the Mexican mafia!

The story unfolded. The shrimp boats worked nights and rested during the day, and the crew caught a well-deserved sleep. They anchored off the coast of Sinaloa, Mexico, and were then boarded by six men with guns. Forced to remove all their clothes, they were thrown into a warehouse. 600 kilograms of shrimp, their personal belongings and money were taken.

We hurried to the boat and I will never forget the sight of them: bare chested, ratty sweatpants and no hats, squinting from the sun. At that point it would be hard to tell the difference between the bandits and the crew. They all looked really rough. We were told that this was a common occurrence, as the wealth represented by the shrimp, as valuable as gold, was regularly taken by the Mexican Mafia. Elisabeth looked at me with big big eyes. “You wanted to be on this boat trip.” I looked at Chamula. He nodded his head. I couldn’t even imagine the horror I would face, or the likelihood of not coming back.

Strong northerly winds kept the boat aground for several days. Since the captain and crew were paid according to the amount of shrimp brought in, it was crucial to get back to work and make up for the loss. I still couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye and go back to America, so when he asked me if I wanted to go back, I stupidly said yes. Elisabeth reminded me that it was a “lifetime experience” and we both laughed at the old joke. Back on board, I watched the palm trees recede in the distance and the water catch the last golden rays of the sun; I already had serious doubts about my decision. Chamula didn’t tell me where we were going or how long we would be away. I found him at the head and that’s when I learned the truth. We drove for two days, and the first colleague mentioned that we were going to Sinaloa! What? Chamula sheepishly confirmed that it was true, not wanting to tell me because he didn’t want me to go back to the states. We headed to the coast of Sinaloa, right where they had just been robbed!

“Pendejo!” I retorted angrily, cursing like a Mexican sailor. On the deck I collapsed and leaned against the salt-coated nets. I was in shock. I felt like I volunteered to be kidnapped. All because I didn’t have the guts to say goodbye. Well, I made a choice and the choice brought me here. Done. Now the only thing to do was either stay angry or go on an adventure. Since it’s such a small world on a ship in the middle of the sea, I thought an adventure was a better choice.

Chamula followed me. I didn’t understand how he could put me in danger and I told him. His answer was very pragmatic. He assured me that since all the shrimp were gone and the mob knew about it, we would be safe from the threat for a while. The sea started to rise the further south we went. I started taking large doses of Dramamine and fell asleep. When I stood up, the waves had turned deep blue with deep troughs and white caps. I took the coffee to Chamula and asked if she could show me where we were. I might as well learn something during my journey to hell. He was overjoyed to see that I wasn’t holding a grudge. In the evening we went south to Loreto and then southeast across the Gulf at night. We were now close to the mainland of Mexico. I sat on the wheelhouse step, sipped my coffee and watched the whales splash.

At 16:00 the rumble of the engine died down. We tied up on the stern of another cooperative boat in the middle of nowhere. Well, I knew we were in the Gulf, but I couldn’t see land. The sea was a constant, merciless movement. Concerned, I asked the captain if we were going close to shore. No, he admitted, this was very different from Mulege. It was unlikely that we would see land, because the bay here was so shallow that boats could easily anchor right in the middle. I thought the ships might not have a problem, but I did.

The next morning I crawled out of bed and Joven’s movement threw my body against the cabin wall. “Mierda!” Another day of heavy seas. I wondered how many days I could stay drugged and sleep. Then I wondered if I could get Chamula to let me off the ship. When I asked him he said he had a friend in Los Glorious, Sinaloa who could probably help. And just like that, the captain pulled the anchor and we headed for land. I felt terrible that it was the reason everything was changing. My hermanos looked at it as just another lark, an “adventure” at the moment, and if you were a woman stuck in the middle of the gulf, their attitude was very helpful.

Once moored alongside Los Glorious, the wonders of Mexican transportation became clear. Everyone knew Joven, and the panga was already on its way out. The sea was rough. I literally jumped off the ship onto the smaller boat below as they were both tossed around. The pescador manning the launch maneuvered through the broken surf. And like a surfer, riding a curl, he would pause for a moment, then at the perfect moment use the power of the water to propel us forward. We would power slide until another wave hit us. We rode the momentum all the way to the beach.

After pulling the boat above the high tide line, we entered a barrio of adobe houses. Chickens and dogs ran everywhere. We stopped for a cold drink in a small tienda. The sun was hot and penetrating. Sitting under a shady tree near the Sinaloa River, old friends chatted while a lone gringa looked on. In Mexico, there was a time to visit and a time to leave. You never thought about leaving when you were visiting. But when the time came we had to go back to the trawler to get my things. We jumped back into the panga and roared through the mangroves through the gaping mouth of the Sinaloa River into the crashing surf. The breaking waves hit the bottom of the boat so hard that we had to hold on with both hands to keep from being thrown out. I knew Chamula expected me to be scared, but when he looked at me, I grinned so big we both must have looked like strays. I was “muy loca” for more! And that day I earned the title of “Pirate”.

Back on the decks of the Joven, I went to pack. Chamula wouldn’t let me go alone, so we both went to the beach to meet his friend. We rode in the back of an open truck all the way to Los Mochis airport. It was a tearful farewell. My life has changed profoundly these months. I lived and loved life to the fullest. I had to go though and it hurt. Looking down at the glistening waters of the bay, I picked up my journal to keep the memories fresh. Like a giant spine of ancient volcanic rock, the Baja Peninsula rises out of the water. I slowly closed the diary to prepare for landing in La Paz.
