The Top Ten Mermaid Movies Ever
Most people have seen the Disney animated film “The Little Mermaid”. But there are a few others that are absolutely great – the classics. Here they are:
1. My top pick for a mermaid movie is “Splash.” Not only is it funny and the plot is wonderful, but there are plenty of great shots of Daryl Hannah mermaiding in the ocean. We can’t get enough of it! Please note that this is not a film for children. It was made in the ’80s and is mostly fine for family viewing. But there is some nudity (when the mermaid emerges into New York from the ocean with nothing but her long hair to cover her) and there are some implications of what she and Tom Hanks’ character are doing in the elevator, although nothing is shown. The movie is wonderful, with a great story and fantastic mermaid footage and lots of laughs, as well as great romance.
2. My second best choice is “The Secret of Roan Inish”. This is a safe, quiet movie that the whole family can enjoy. It was filmed in Ireland and as such is slower and quieter than most American films. It’s about a little Irish girl who moves in with her grandparents. While there she unknowingly stumbles upon a mystery surrounding the island where the family once lived, called “Roan Inish” (Seal Island). As he slowly solves the mystery, he restores healing and unity to the family. In this movie, the mythical creature is a selkie, not a mermaid. A selkie lives in the form of a seal. Occasionally he climbs a rock and skins a seal, revealing a beautiful woman. So this movie is a little different, and you’ll never look at seals the same way again.
3. My third favorite movie about mermaids is “Aquamarine”. This one is aimed at a teenage audience. There is nothing inappropriate, so the whole family can enjoy it. It’s a delightfully different take on the classic story of The Little Mermaid, with a delightful twist. The mermaid in this movie is different, more like an ordinary teenage girl. There are some good shots of her in the water. The messages in this film are of high quality, such as loyalty, friendship, self-confidence, selflessness and courage. And it’s also very funny.
4. Number four of my top mermaid movies is an old black and white classic called Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. You’ll have a hard time finding this movie to watch, but VHS versions are available for sale on Amazon.com. All underwater footage was shot at the famous Weeki Wachee Springs in Weeki Wachee, Florida, just one year after the underwater theater opened. Filmed in 1948, this film tells the story of a married couple who go on vacation in the Caribbean. The man is almost 50 years old and has a midlife crisis. While on vacation, he accidentally catches a live mermaid from the sea! Ann Blyth plays an enchanting mermaid and you will love this wonderful movie. The only objections a parent might have are the extramarital flirtation theme and a few funny scenes with a guy trying to quit smoking.
5. One that is a little different, and that just recently came out, is a Japanese anime Miyazaki film called “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea”, or simply “Ponyo”. In this one, the fish is depicted as a goldfish with a human face, which is quite strange. But in an unusual twist, this five-year-old fish must get a little five-year-old human boy to love her faithfully, or she will turn into sea foam and be gone. It’s such a sweet interpretation, these little kids are learning to love and trust each other in such an innocent way. It is a story of wonder and courage and should not be missed.
6. My pick for number six is Disney’s The Little Mermaid. It was the movie that brought Disney back into the mainstream movie business in the 1980s. The music and the story are delightful. I remember how enchanted I was when it first came out – it’s a wonderful movie about mermaids, fun for the whole family.
7. Number seven for me is the Russian adaptation of “The Little Mermaid”. This 1976 film features lots of wonderful footage of a mermaid under the sea. Back then, swimmers only had small fins, so they had to ripple their legs in a very fast motion to move. The underwater scenes are only at the beginning of the movie, but they are fantastic!! (I can’t understand how those swimmers could be in the water with all those jellyfish!!). You can find this movie for rent on Netflix and it was directed by Vladimir Bychkov. Again, this version of Anderson’s famous story is a slightly different, almost completely new story. Note that one scene contains nudity and depictions of a witch performing magic. Apart from these, the whole family will enjoy this one.
8. “Barbie Mermaidia” is a movie for young children, but the plot is good and the scenes are beautiful. I especially enjoyed the unusual design of Barbie’s mermaid tail. In this story, the main character has to make a big sacrifice and learn some good lessons. I like this one better than the latest Mermaid Barbie movie because of the great message.
9. There was a lot of excitement this year about the new release of “Barbie in a Mermaid Tail.” This one has some wonderfully fun surfing scenes. The mermaid world in Oceana was a little weird – basically an imitation of our materialistic society. This was funny, but in this setting you lose the mystery and magic of the legendary mermaids. This is what I call a “fluffy” movie – nothing deep, just fun pictures and a nice little story.
10. My least favorite movie about mermaids is a children’s movie called “Roxy Hunter and the Myth of the Mermaid”. It’s about a young small-town journalist named Roxy who gradually discovers that her new homeless friend (a pretty blonde) is actually a mermaid. The movie is okay, but there are no underwater scenes or mermaid tail scenes throughout the entire movie – none – until the very end. Then, finally, you see for about 10 seconds a blue mermaid swimming underwater with a beautiful tail. However, the story is interesting enough and kids will definitely enjoy this movie.
