Understanding Milspeak (Military Lingo)

One of the first lessons a new recruit learns is that the military speaks a different language than the rest of the nation. Recruits will most of the time know some terms, such as “latrine” instead of “bathroom”. Others are more obscure, like PT or BRM. Here are some useful expressions and phrases.

AAR refers to “After Action Review”. Everything done in the military should be completed with an AAR to identify lessons that can be used to improve the next such operation.

Blue and red are terms used to describe friendly and enemy forces. “Blue on Blue” would be a friendly fire incident, while “Red on Red” would mean our enemies disagreeing with each other.

Combined is a term meaning that a command has elements from more than one nation involved. Joint is a term that means forces from more than one service are involved. If the US and Australian military are represented in a task force, it is combined. If the Australians were replaced by Marines, it would be joint. It is possible to be both at once.

Hiding is something that protects you from being seen. A cover is something that protects you from impact.

Despite all the movies you’ve seen, an EPW is an enemy POW, while a POW is a privately owned weapon. Similarly, a POV is a privately owned vehicle, as opposed to a government vehicle.

FA stands for Field Artillery, one of the most important features that distinguish the Army from the Scouts.

“Formation” refers to the assembly of a unit into a standard array, usually in the shape of a rectangle. Everyone will stay there for inspections, speeches, roll calls, or to keep soldiers on hand for later. When the formation is marching and preparing to cross the road, soldiers will be assigned to run out to block traffic. They are called “Guardians of the Road”.

A “rifle” is a specific type of artillery barrel, the thing you hold in your hands and point at the enemy is a “rifle”. BRM is Basic Rifle Marksmanship, which means going out to the range to practice shooting. Remember, point the end towards the bad guy.

MSR stands for Main Supply Route. This is the way supplies and exchanges and such go. ASR is an alternative supply route.

OPFOR, opposing force. This is a friendly unit tasked with being the other side in training. Sometimes used ironically for real enemies.

PT is physical training or exercise. It is not practical torture.

ROE stands for Rules of Engagement. These are hard and fast rules that change over time as the chain of command responds to changing situations and vary from theater to theater. Knowing and tracking ROE is serious business.

A SNAFU could be described as a normal situation, everything goes wrong. JANFU is a Joint Army/Navy Fark Up. FUBAR has been cheated beyond all recognition.

SOF stands for Special Operations Forces, the ones the news always call commandos out of a sense of ignorance.

TLAR means it looks like it.
