Aristotle Onassis, One of the World’s Richest Men How He Recreated Himself Makes a Great Study

Aristotle Onassis was one of the most successful, successful, and successful men in the world in the mid-20th century. Today, years after his death, he is mostly remembered as an ultra-rich shipping magnate who toured the world on his magnificent yacht and for his romance with the diva soprano Maria Callas and his marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy. However, before he reached business and social heights, he was a very crude, uncultured, unartistic work. His effort to change a bleak future is noteworthy: and a teaching aid that anyone can use in their pursuit of success.

Onassis was born in Turkey to Greek parents. At the end of World War I, he, along with millions of others, was forced into refugee status and arrived in Argentina as a penniless immigrant. His Spanish was minimal, his education limited and his skills offered were not highly valued. Nevertheless, he examined his circumstances realistically and with deep analysis. He recognized that out of the post-war chaos would come an opportunity for an agile and creative entrepreneur. Being single was just an obstacle, not a closed door for Onassis.

As Onassis learned about the ways of Argentine society and business, he noticed that there were specific clubs, restaurants, hotels and theaters that were almost exclusively frequented by the successful business and political class. Always a keen observer of human nature, he realized that contacts and friendships of value to an ambitious man like himself could only be nurtured in this purified realm. Onassis was determined to find a way.

He worked day jobs, including being a telephone operator. However, he was different from the collaborators and other immigrants. He immersed himself in all things Argentine and saved every cent he earned that he didn’t need for a basic existence. Most importantly, he recognized the old saying; “the rich are different from you and me” was so true. He had to imitate the rich to become rich. He never saw successful people as an enemy. He had aspirations, not jealousy in his heart.

Onassis became addicted to quality in all areas of life. While still poor, he saved every peso until he could afford a hand-tailored Saville Row suit. He only had one suit, but it was elegant. He also noticed that the rich looked healthier, happier. They seemed to have tanned skin as a sign of their happy lifestyle. Onassis developed a lifelong addiction to the pursuit of the perfect tan. His complexion was internationally famous long before actor George Hamilton achieved similar fame. To this day, a tan is an emblem of the good life for the successful class.

A Saville Row suit, fine personal furnishings and a tan that reeked of idle leisure and success were just the beginning. Onassis was still a rough clip. Still, he believed in his ultimate destiny. Every night he would have a drink at the bar of the Intercontinental Hotel in Buenos Aires, the best city. Just one drink, because it was all he could afford. He still worked as a telephone operator, but kept his parallel lives as a blue-collar worker and social status seeker firmly separate.

His nightly visits to the bar of the Intercontinental Hotel gradually lead to the construction of a network of business and social contacts. The famous Argentine soprano Claudia Musa often visited the hotel. She was an adored opera star and cultural beauty. Onassis was basically a nobody and a poser. And yet, he pursued the beautiful singer and won her heart with his usual persistence. This drive to win would manifest itself in all areas of his long and exciting life.

Onassis recognized that Argentine women preferred a type of sweet Turkish tobacco that was not widely available in South America. Using your newfound connections; he mediated the import business for the tobacco inventory. He collected the capital necessary to organize a small factory and began to market several brands of Turkish cigarettes. This small but successful business was the basis for his later international business prominence.

Onassis admitted that World War 11 was inevitable. The movement of war materiel was to become crucial to the victory of the Allies in the war. Shipping would be very profitable, if he could find an inventory of ships to buy. With customary elan, he found a small fleet of sturdy but well-used freighters in the St. Lawrence waterway and arranged a solid line of credit to purchase the motley flotilla. He was on his way to becoming the most famous shipping magnate in history.

Entrepreneurs, in order to succeed, often have to change elements of their personal lifestyle. We’ve all heard the old adage, “success breeds success”. No one practiced this truth more fully and instructively than Aristotle Onassis. He bought a high-quality suit. He collected beautiful women. He went to the best clubs, even though he couldn’t afford more than one drink. He used his new environment, new contacts and network to benefit his focused pursuit of success. Why did Willy Sutton rob banks: because there was money there! Onassis also made the elementary decision to hang out where the money is.

I work with entrepreneurs from all walks of life: no two are the same. One of the most difficult aspects of the entrepreneurial process to overcome is the need for lifestyle adjustments. A sacrifice today will pay dividends tomorrow. Venture capital won’t usually be found in a pool hall. The need to improve self-presentation and constant networking is the most important. You have to constantly close sales, improve your skills and focus completely on achieving your goal.

Aristotle Onassis worked as a blue-collar worker, spoke Spanish as a third language, was a displaced immigrant on a foreign continent, and had no personal assets. Nevertheless, he orchestrated a personal plan to overcome his obstacles and lead a life of legendary achievement.

I spend a lot of time in my marketing and financing consulting coaching inventors and entrepreneurs to overcome self-imposed obstacles. Some readily recognize the need to change habits and use parts of the Onassis model. They often have the ability to succeed. Many, unfortunately, decide that they know best, the markets will adapt to their wishes and they can take a shortcut to success. They always fail. This is an absolute observation.
