5 Top Tips For Kid-Friendly Healthy Lunch Ideas

Making sure our kids eat healthy has rightfully become a national obsession and I’m sure, like most parents, you want healthy lunch ideas to help your kids stay motivated, energized and reach their true potential.

There are some really great reasons for our kids to eat healthy, and here are two of the most important.

1. Research has shown that children who eat a healthy lunch are more motivated at school and generally have better results. That’s what we all want for our kids and it’s great that we have the power as parents to easily make it happen!

2. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in North America – 5 million youth ages 6 to 17 are clinically obese. By introducing your children to healthy eating early, you give them a life full of health!

Of course, there are many other reasons that I will not list. I’m guessing that if you’re reading this, you’re already convinced of the value of providing healthy food and snacks for your family!

So what are some tips to help you provide your kids with healthy meal options?

1. First, have healthy snacks lying around the house. Children are natural scavengers and if they don’t have healthy snacks available, they will sneak in unhealthy options. In fact, I suggest you clean out the cupboard and try to remove all unhealthy snacks, so the kids can’t see them and you’re not tempted to “indulge” in a stressful moment.

*Some great healthy snack tips are:

– Hummus and vegetable sticks

– Salsa and refried beans mixed together to create a great snack or dip for toasted pita triangles

– Toasted pita triangles and low-fat ranch dressing

– Sweet and crunchy slices of vegetables like carrots and red peppers

All of this is quick, easy to make and stored in the fridge ready when you need it.

2. Another key idea about healthy eating is making food that is easy for your kids to make and easy for you to make. It’s very likely that you’re a busy person, so don’t stress yourself out, there are many great quick and easy options available to you.

* Simple tip: Wraps are easy and kids love them. Try adding a few new ingredients this way. My favorites are the baked tofu, peanut butter and snow peas and the turkey breast, mozzarella, cucumber, avocado and alfalfa sprout wrap. Both a mixture of ingredients that the children have already tried and new ones. Try substituting peanut butter for cashew or almond butter for variety.

3. Try to prepare as much as you can in advance. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to come home from work and put 100% effort into your kids’ meals or prepare a ton of food in the morning. So, choose a time when you can give it your full attention and prepare a few days in advance. Some things like sauces and dips will keep for a while, so decide when the time is right for you to start cooking! When you can cook is also a great indicator of what kind of lunch to make. If you really only have free time on the weekends to do anything complicated, first thing in the morning pick things that will stick around and need very little extra preparation.

* Top tip: Many meals can be frozen, which is a good tip for after school meals. Cooking a large casserole, soup or stew and dividing it into bags for the next week is always a great idea. For school lunches, try to prepare the ingredients a few days in advance. Cooked chicken and turkey breast can be stored for 3-4 days. You can also make any dips like ranch dressing 3-4 days ahead. Tuna mayo will also keep, but I suggest sealing it tightly as it can get smelly in the fridge!

4. Try to involve your child in the process of healthy eating whenever possible. If your child hates sweet things (unlikely, but it happens sometimes!), don’t force it, instead look at salty lunches and vice versa. You want to introduce your children to new foods and food experiences, and this can be an enjoyable process for everyone. Choosing things I really can’t stand will be like hitting a wall every time you eat.

5. A good tip for introducing children to new food experiences is to use portion control. Mix a small amount of the new food with something you know you like and slowly introduce a variety of foods that way. Just remember it’s okay for your little one not to like everything, I know I don’t and I’m sure you do too! For example, if you try adding avocado and celery to a tuna mayo salad.

Great healthy lunch ideas that your kids will love are easy to find if you follow these rules: keep it simple, don’t overdo it, get your little one’s input, and introduce things slowly. You’ll be a family full of healthy meals in no time!
