Hip Hop Group Public Enemy – Pioneers in Music With Politically Charged Lyrics

Public Enemy is a well-known hip hop group, often known simply as PE. They are from Long Island in the New York area and are known for their politically charged lyrics.

The way the group started was an interesting journey. The first origin of the name Public Enemy actually comes from Chuck Dj’s song, “Public Enemy Number One”. Chuck D signed to Def Jam Records and then recruited Eric “Vietnam” Sadler, Hank Schocklee and Keith Shocklee, who were known as the Bomb Squad. They were the production team. He then added Professor Griff, who was the “Minister of Information”. First Terminator X and Flavor Flav were added and the group was complete.

After the group got together, they began opening for The Beastie Boys at some of their East Coast gigs. The group’s debut album was called Yo! Boom Rush The Show, which was first released in 1987. Then the group would release another album in 1988, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which was much more popular than their first album release. One of the hit singles from this album was “Don’t Believe the Hype” and soon this album was named Album of the Year, which was the first album in the hip hop genre to hit number one with rock critics.

The most successful album that Public Enemy ever released was Fear of a Black Planet. It included songs with political themes and was actually put into the Library of Congress in 2005, a huge honor for the group. One of the songs on this album, “Fight the Power” has been considered the most influential and popular song in hip hop history, and Accalimedmusic.net ranked the song as the 80th greatest song of all time.

In many ways, Public Enemy was a pioneering group in the hip hop community. Terminator X often used special scratching tricks in the music, and some of the beats offered by Bomb Squad were definitely unique and innovative. Through their music, they introduced new elements into hip hop, including funk and free jazz, giving their music a unique sound. With their awareness of politics, culture and the social sphere, they brought a whole new level to the hip hop world. There had been a few political hip hop songs before this group, but Public Enemy would build their entire image around a stance that was political. Soon after their success in this type of hip hop, many artists emerged that celebrated the many Afrocentric themes they did, including X Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Koo Moe Dee, and even Queen Latifah.

Throughout the past 20+ years, Public Enemy has continued to release and perform their unique brand of hip hop. Since 1987 and their first album, they have released a total of 12 albums, and their last album, How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul? released in 2007.
