Taare Zameen Par – Movie Review

The Hindi phrase “Taare Zameen Par” translates into English as “Stars walk the earth”. The film is a great representation of each of us, in our world.

I can explain the movie to you in one line “Ishan is a boy who suffers from dyslexia but is afraid to face his troubles even to his parents due to peer, society and parental pressure!”

The direction of the film is so great that I feel like standing and applauding the director. Details, every emotion, even a drop of dew is so beautifully observed and more importantly captured, it’s unbelievable, it’s rare to see masterpieces like this!!

I saw myself in that little boy. Not because I suffer from some such disease, but because we have become entangled in the chains of social customs, especially in India, that we have stopped living for ourselves. I have always been bright in academics, but there was a stage in my life when I wanted to follow my dreams, which would take me to a very different world. I wanted to do journalism, become a writer, go to the front and cover, and much more. I wanted people to know me by name, wait for my column and do a lot more. I don’t blame my parents for who I am now, because I’m still living the dream. But due to social pressures, I didn’t even dare to ask my parents about my wish. I couldn’t just bear the sight even in my sleep of my parents facing comments like “you are the daughter of a ‘newsreader'”! Yes, in our society journalism is still called ‘newsreader’, designers ‘tailors’, hairdressers ‘barbers’ and what not. Basically the bottom line is that if you’re not an engineer or a doctor, be prepared to be looked down upon, and I don’t understand why!

The movie made me live a dream for three hours. I saw my weaknesses in that little 9 year old boy and also my talents in his. I always wanted to paint, because I think it brings you closer to God. The ability to imagine and create! I liked the director’s thought to magnify the small details of our daily life events that many often miss. The first drop of rain, the innocence with which we watch anything for the first time, the monotony that contains so many hidden emotions and actions that we miss.

Each person is special in their own way, just how we look at it. Like the famous saying “beauty lies in the eye of the beholder!”

It reminds me that there was a nice quote in the movie (I don’t remember who) “We don’t want cynics who know the price of everything and the value of nothing” It’s so true! It’s all a play on words!

And yes, the movie is so Bollywood. Extra effort for a happy ending, an angel of God at the right time and place, etc. But this did not soften the film, but rather enhanced its beauty and virtue.

‘Special children’, yes we are all special, we just need to realize our worth. We are so used to living for others that we hardly reward ourselves for a good action/achievement/accomplishment. There is a star in each of us, it’s just that we can’t all notice ourselves.
