His Most Famous Print (The Prophet) – Emil Nolde
Emil Nolde (1867-1956) was a German ‘expressionist’ painter and printmaker. ‘Expressionism’ is an artistic movement in which concepts are derived from nature, figures are deformed or enlarged, and colors are intensified. Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein and Otto Mueller were the prime movers of ‘Expressionism’, and the trio joined the ‘Expressionist’ group ‘Die Brucke (Most, 1905).’ Emil’s works, including “The Prophet”, were influenced by his own experiences, a feature typical of “Expressionism”. Some of his most famous works are:

o Portrait of a man
o Portrait of a young girl
o A young couple
“The Prophet” is the most famous Nolde woodcut, as well as the best in the world to date. Woodcut refers to the carved block of wood from which prints are made. “Prophet” symbolizes the wild and furious pain in the painting. Emil created this after recovering from a serious illness. After his recovery, he was inspired to create paintings about spirituality, and began to take references from biblical passages. “The Prophet” was one such work in the post-recovery spiritual series.
Nolde’s prints had simple lines or stained glass colors that emphasized his free life, regardless of any conventional rules, regulations and practices. He often used shades of yellow and red in his works. His paintings were mostly based on demonic heads, mysterious apparitions and religious figures such as the “Prophet”, reflecting the artist’s penchant for ancient and eternal sentiments.
Created in 1912 and measuring 12 5/8″ x 8 3/4″ (32.1 x 22.2 cm), the German Expressionist work “The Prophet” remains a masterpiece of twentieth-century art. His print comes out best on Japanese paper, the availability of which is scarce. Emil’s most famous print has only a black and white pattern, depicting a religious figure. The “Prophet” is shown to have overgrown hair and beard, his face is calmly depressed, and his eyes and cheeks are sunken, which shows the Prophet’s personal carelessness. Emil’s most famous print is intense, even though it is wordless. Undoubtedly, “The Prophet” creates and establishes a deep sense of spirituality in the viewers. The “prophet’s” face, although dark and graphic, acts as a playground of human pain and suffering. In all his works, Emil Nolde always wanted his messages to be clearly conveyed.
