T-Shirt Printing Tips – How To Create Your Own Personalized Shirts Online

T-shirt printing – 3 things to keep in mind. These three inexpensive tips are easy to follow, simple to use, and will give you a lot of satisfaction when you wear your personalized shirts soon.

Let’s begin with the end in mind. Instead of rushing out and ordering shirts online for printing, I suggest you start with the end in mind.

Why do you want to print a t-shirt? Is it for work or is it for a birthday? Maybe soon for a fun run or just as a gift for someone? Could it be as a memento of a recent trip?

Each of the above events may result in the selection of a different garment that the wearer must keep in mind. Maybe the climate around you can dictate what you wear. It is important to keep this in mind when deciding on printing designs on shirts. A sweatshirt as a gift in the summer may not be as acceptable as a crew-neck t-shirt. So let’s get started!

Tip 1: Why do you want to print your own t-shirt?

This is an important question because it will lead us to the purpose of the shirt, the fabric it is made of and whether it is a jersey or hoodie for winter wear or a tank top or crewneck for a hot summer event.

Let me give you three examples here to help you understand how important this planning stage is before you randomly run off to buy shirts online.

Example one! Let’s imagine that soon you are planning a date with the boys on a Saturday. It’s all about the groom as it’s his big day with the boys. A group of friends decide that the topic will be about the groom’s football team.

The decision is that they will all wear bespoke T-shirts emblazoned with the characters of the Footy Idol with a twist. Each football player will be done as a cartoon character instead of using pictures of the players. This could be great fun with even bigger shirts. Get a graphic designer to come up with some character sketches for the whole party.

Example two! You have an outdoor fitness event. Your fitness club needs t-shirts with a logo printed on the front and back, as well as on the sleeves. The club wants a polyester shirt and needs the shirts to be cost effective. Since the shirts are not cotton, I suggest you consider screen printing the logo and design onto the shirts instead of digitally printing the images. To get the best prices, most printers suggest that at least 20 shirts must be printed at a time. So once you have your shirts sorted, all you need to do is move on to tip #2 to get quality shirts printed.

Example three! Imagine you are planning a birthday party for a 6-year-old girl. There are 30 kids coming and you want t-shirts that match the party theme. You can choose a t-shirt or sweatshirt that fits the kids. Ordering in bulk will be profitable for you as most printing companies offer discounts for large bulk orders. Once you know what the purpose is, it’s time to move on to tip #2 below.

Once the type of shirt is known, now it’s time to decide what you want printed on top. We have a choice of images, designs or TEXT. Here we will focus on the image or photo that we will print on the clothing. This leads us to tip #2.

Tip 2: What image sizes are best for printing?

I find that most people who come to me to print their t-shirts don’t have the correct photo size to begin with. What most people do is download free images from Google or Facebook. While these graphics may look fine on a small screen, they are rarely the right size to print on a much larger surface such as a shirt or sweater.

Images from the Internet are reduced in size and resolution around 96 dpi or around 5 cm x 5 cm dimensions. These images will not be large enough to even look good on the breast pocket of your business polo shirts.

If you try to stretch the image over the back or front of the Tee, you will get a pixelated image printed due to the poor quality of the image you used.

The solution is for large file images. The recommended resolution for good images is a minimum of 300 dpi or about 30 cm x 30 cm in size. Three times more than the above. These are large files and if stretched will easily produce high quality t-shirts when printing graphics onto garments.

There are many sites that offer great images for a small fee. Here are 3 paid sites I recommend:

  1. SHUTTERSTOCK.com

  2. GETTYIMAGES.com.au

  3. DEPOSITPHOTOS.com

Some free sites where you can download your designs are:

  • BURST by SHOPIFY

  • UNSPLASH

  • PEXELS

Useful points to keep in mind when choosing an image.

Always make sure not to use images without the permission of the person who created them. Google these conditions below to make sure you select the correct images without any problems.

What is Creative Commons? Creative Commons is a non-profit business group that helps distribute and use creativity and knowledge through free tools that are legal to use. Now, use under the Creative Commons license ranges from full use of the images you want to use without attribution to allowing only certain uses and no modifications to the images used. Make sure you understand the licenses before using images if you search for free graphics online.

What is public domain? Works in the public domain are those whose copyright has expired, been revoked, or is unenforceable. Finding something online doesn’t mean it’s in the public domain. Again, it is your responsibility to select non-copyrighted images.

What are Royalty Free Images? Most royalty free images are not necessarily free. In many cases, all you need to do is purchase the images for a small one-time cost, so you then have the rights to use the image for your own purposes. You are allowed to use the images as often as you like. The “free” in “free” just means that you don’t have to pay royalties to the owner of the image every time you use it. Tip 3: How do I choose the right shirt color?

We went through the process of deciding what occasion the t-shirt would be used for. It could be the money party we talked about earlier or it could be a team event for a local fitness club or even a birthday party for a 5 year old.

Then we went and got some cool images from the internet using the free or paid sites I mentioned above. So the last step is to choose the type of t-shirt and the brand we want for our event soon.

If the night out is in a colder climate, we should consider using a full sleeve t-shirt or even a hoodie or sweater to print your photos on. For warmer tropical climates, use a sleeveless shirt for a beach party or a half-sleeve shirt with a neckline for comfort. Good brands are AS COLOR or GILDAN to name just a few.

Make sure the shirts are 100% cotton as they make better printed shirts. They are much more comfortable to wear.

Choose your shirt colors!

Now we move on to choosing the colors of the clothes you plan to print on. Always use contrasting colors as a guide.

What do I mean by this? If you should have images with lighter or darker colors, choose a lighter colored shirt. Avoid using a dark image on a black or navy blue shirt. Choose a white shirt or a lighter shade of blue to print images on. Your prints will stand out on the t-shirts and you will be very satisfied with the final result.

Conclusion! In short, we went through the t-shirt printing process to identify why or where you will wear the garment. Then we found images suitable for the occasion. We finally looked for a t-shirt that has the right color to give the best results with the printed shirts after the t-shirts are printed. I hope these tips help you create great custom printed t-shirts.
