The MAGPRO Marauder Report

Yes. Marauder is the new kid on Precharged Pneumatic [PCP] An unhittable airgun block. After being in the Airgun world for 35 years and building a business in the shooting sports industry for the past 6 plus years, I have developed an appetite for product quality, fair value and manufacturer integrity.

I received my .22 Benjamin Marauder in mid-July 2009. There are as many posts as you’d like to read from owners sharing a variety of personal experiences. After reading a number of these posts you will realize that the reports are so consistent that they seem redundant.

Consistent reports on the Marauder certainly back up the basic performance you can expect if you choose to own a Marauder. My report will confirm many of the performance qualities you may have read about and include original observations that will add to the ongoing Marauder experience.

I agree with many of the favorable reports about the Marauder, such as:

o From the first time you open the box to meeting the Marauder, you feel like you

got more than you paid for. Not something we often feel these days.

o The finish is elegant and exudes visible quality.

o Stealth as a silent report. Indeed!

o Full power shots per fill can be 35 – 45 or even more depending on your personal settings.

o The ability to personally tune the full range of PCP tuning components is a feature the Marauder has and appeals to audiences with a wide range of experience levels.

o The choked barrel makes this rifle very accurate and probably a better shooter than many of its owners.

o The trigger is noticeably friendly and adjustable at the level of the match to boot.

Here are some of my personal observations:

Rotary Magazine

During the “familiarization” period of the new owner, when you are not very familiar with the Marauder handling techniques; user error, not product failure, may cause more than one pellet to be accidentally loaded into the breech. This can happen if the screw is not backed up until it is threaded. The bolt is then allowed to slide forward under spring pressure, resulting in the ball being partially or fully pushed into the breech. The natural thing to do when you discover that the gun is not cocked is to try cocking it again. When you pull the bolt a second time, it releases the rotating magazine to index on the next pellet, which is pushed behind the existing capped grain when you close the bolt again.

Solution 1 – Point the muzzle in a safe direction and use an appropriate recoil stop. Now fire the rifle to clear more bullets in the shutter. This shouldn’t be a problem if you have 800 psi (never tried lower pressure) or more in your tank.

Solution 2 – Empty the rifle completely using the degassing tool method (see owners manual). Then follow the procedure to remove the jammed pellet. Remember, you will be removing more than one pellet at a time, which will cause increased friction between the bore and the pellet. Take your time and be careful not to use a stick that can damage the cuts.

New Marauder users may also find themselves struggling to eject what appears to be a “stuck” magazine. Indeed the magazine ejects flawlessly when used properly and you will not have this problem once you become more familiar with the operation and relationship between the bolt and the rotary magazine. A common culprit for a “stuck” rotary magazine is that the bolt pin may be partially in the magazine. Simply pull the screw back to the rearmost position and the magazine can be removed. (Always fire the rifle in a safe direction to remove any breached pellets.)

Another culprit is a partially loaded pellet. Closing the bolt fully, pushing the pellet fully into the breech, then pulling and holding the breech in the rearmost position will release the magazine for removal. (Always fire the rifle in a safe direction to remove any breached pellet.) Most owners may never experience these problems, but if you do, know that it is not a rotating magazine.

Cover protection

This caution applies to most PCPs and should be helpful in avoiding accidental damage to the lid’s matte finish by the user. There is potential for surface damage to the covered tube area above the charge probe. The quick disconnect fitting can scratch/scratch the bottom of the coated tube when connecting and disconnecting to the charging probe. This can be solved by installing shrink wrap tubing or by wrapping electrical or other durable tape around the quick disconnect component parts (note: make sure the shrink wrap tubing or tape does not interfere with the quick disconnect moving parts). If nothing else, at least place a barrier (eg fabric, gun sock, etc.) over the part of the barrel that may be struck by the quick disconnect hardware. In time, you’ll be glad you practiced careful handling during pressure.

One of the My Optimal Setup settings

A hundred Marauders may be produced and there will be some level of uniqueness in performance characteristics among them. So using my settings may not produce the same results in your rifle. You need to take the time to experiment with your rifle to get the performance you want. Here are the settings I use to achieve a satisfactory Basic Field Distance (BFD): Hammer Tension 6, Hammer Impact 4, and Velocity Adjustment 2.5. (The user manual explains the tuning parameters for the various tuning components). This setup produces an average of 915 feet per second [FPS] with 14.3 gn Crosman Premiers (CP’s) amounting to just over 26 pounds of energy [FPE]….. I get over 30 shots at full power with this setup. When I use the Dynamic 14.5gn PCP2 with the same setting I get 940 FPS resulting in 28 FPE.

Trajectory report and long range shooting

The Marauder performs exceptionally well in long-range shooting conditions. The Marauder can’t be beaten by many well-known PCPs that carry a price tag that runs 2-3 times as much.

Mount a quality mil dot scope and enjoy the long range data plotting process.

Once you do this for the pellet(s) of choice, the data will immediately become invaluable. You’ll shoot with complete confidence at distances up to 75 yards and beyond. My farthest long string shot was in a 15mph wind from left to right at 108 yards making a 4″ group. There was no question the gun was shooting me. I will shoot this distance again under better conditions. Except for the 108 shooting group yds, I also did one of my low tech penetration tests using a soup can (soda cans are too thin). Each shot went in and out of the can and then lodged in the stem stop. At 108 yds the CP 14.3gn pellet travels at 421 FPS and retains 6 FPE.My currently selected max effective field range is 70 yards. At 70 yards the 14.3gn CPs are traveling at 549 fps delivering 9.5 fpe at point of impact (POI) and my point of aim [POA] to POI is between right at ¾ inch.

Crosman Customer Service

I have had the pleasure and on some occasions the displeasure of working with numerous customer service teams in the shooting sports industry. My interaction with the Crosman Customer Service staff was one of the most satisfying, respectful and responsive customer care experiences I have had in any service industry. Crosman listened respectfully to my concerns, answered my questions, and followed up with me to make sure I was happy with their decisions. I’m still shaken when I think back to the time I received a check-in call from a Crosman representative who I knew was home sick for the day. Janet’s colleagues were very helpful during her absence. However, it was important for Janet to know that I was a happy customer, even though she was not in the office that day. Crosman treated me like a valued customer. Kudos to Crosman Corporation for excellence in customer care.

I’m currently putting the Marauder through some additional testing (eg hunting, silhouette, different pellets, drawing more tune adjustments and more…). Certainly, an important measure is the Marauder’s reliability over time. Unfortunately, my time machine is on five-year service. Therefore, the Marauder must be tested by time the old fashioned way.

The Benjamin Marauder lives up to its claims and is quickly establishing a respectable place in the quality PCP family of precision air rifles for adults.

If you find the MAGPRO Marauder Report useful and would like me to test and review your Airgun industry products, I welcome the opportunity to work with your business.
