Motorola Wilder – A Decent Phone To Have

Motorola is one of those companies that has fallen off the radar recently, with other companies like Apple, HTC and Samsung dominating the smartphone market. This is something we don’t really understand, as Motorola has recently been one of the most impressive mobile phone manufacturers, continuously releasing models at the forefront of technology. Well, July 2011 welcomes the release of the Wilder model, a budget device that they hope will put the company back on the radar and give some serious competition to the big boys at this end of the price scale.

There are many things that will win over the masses in the Motorola Wilder. First, aesthetically, the Wilder is remarkably similar to Motorola’s previous release, the Defy. Rugged, yet with sleek styling lines, the Wilder definitely has a place among smartphone beauty pageants. There is a physical phone button on the face for easy access to the home menu, a lock button on the side and a volume control button is also on the side. The resistive touchscreen is a small 2.8 inches, but strictly speaking it looks pretty nice, and the scrolling screen acts as a notification bar, keeping you up to date with the latest news, missed calls and unread messages.

If you’re like us and treat your phone a little less than it deserves, perhaps spilling a cup of tea here and there with your handset on the firing line, then you’ll love the fact that the Wilder is splash and dust resistant.

With the phone being so cheaply priced, you can’t expect much in terms of fancy features, but it packs a lot for such a small price. The rear-facing camera is only 2 megapixels, but you manage to take some decent shots in bright light, the 6X digital zoom is a modest touch that doesn’t really do much, but the camera can also shoot VGA-quality videos.

There is a decent music and video player as well as an FM radio, however you need headphones to act as an antenna. Speaking of headphones, the 3.5mm jack lets you use your own headphones rather than the ones that come in the box. Another neat feature is the inclusion of Soundhound, a program that detects and identifies music tracks.

The internet connection is not too bad and there are features that allow you to quickly access social networking sites, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. There’s also a range of games to enjoy, including the old favorite Tetris.

To be perfectly honest, when it comes to flaws, Wilder has a few. First, we think the screen is too small at 2.3 inches, but maybe that’s because we’ve been spoiled by HTC’s latest models. The quality is excellent for a screen this size, but we weren’t overly impressed.

Other than that, the 2 megapixel camera was very disappointing and without the flash you can’t take any photos at night. We were also disappointed by the paltry 5MB of built-in memory, but if you buy a microSD card, it supports up to 32GB, which some older phones can’t even stretch.

In conclusion, for the price you can’t expect much from Motorola’s latest release, but what you get works pretty well. If you’re looking for a phone with a decent camera, be clear as you won’t get Bailey-with-Wilder-style photos, but otherwise it’s a pretty decent phone at a price that will help Motorola dominate that end of the market.
