Air Peace Honoured for Foiling Child Trafficking

One of the highlights of the 27th Annual Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) Lecture and Awards, in Lagos, was the tribute to the Air Peace crew for thwarting the efforts of two women to transport a three-month-old boy from Lagos to Banjul. .

Sunday Odita, the president of the Crime Journalists Association of Nigeria (CRAN) said at the presentation: “We are elated as journalists to notice in the course of our duties that some people are doing things to write home about. When we noticed that the Air Peace Crew showed praise valuable professionalism and humanity the frustrating attempt by two women to transfer a three month old boy on a Lagos-Banjul flight on June 4, 2018, we wrote it as something worthy of an award, so today I am privileged to fulfill what our members patriotically resolved over a year ago days.”

The CRAN president praised his members “for voting nem-con to award the most safety-conscious crew award to the Air Peace Crew, even when it was brought before the House for multiple votes.” This, he added, shows that the honor is well-deserved and thoughtful.

Calling on people in all walks of life to emulate the honesty demonstrated by the Air Peace crew, he encouraged the winners to “be proud of the award because it comes unsolicited from the consciousness of the society”.

An elated Stanley Olisa, Executive Director of Corporate Communications, Air Peace, while thanking CRAN members, explained that the airline trains its cabin crew to be very security conscious. “It has proved valuable as the airline has recently prevented three acts of child trafficking. Our flight attendants are always safety conscious and we will continue to work with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIPS, to report any suspected act of child trafficking”.

Narrating how the incident happened, he said: “One of the flight attendants noticed that the baby was crying endlessly on board and approached the alleged mother who refused to breastfeed the child. Everything became suspicious and on arrival in Banjul, the crew alerted the authorities who investigated two women. It was subsequently discovered that the child was not theirs and it was clearly a matter of child trafficking”.

The crew who received the award were Captain Isi Eghoghon, Captain Sinmisola Ajibola and First Officer Ayodeji Bode-Thomas. Also, the cabin crew who were awarded NAPTIP ambassador medals are Chioma Agba, Nana De-Man, Cynthia Ugba, Mojoko Ewane, Taiye Abbey, Victoria Okpiaifo and Ngozi Ezeamaka.

The CRAN Awards reflect a determination to reward individuals and organizations that have carried out key humanitarian initiatives, particularly crime prevention efforts.
